MAN — Senior pitcher Taylor Tomblin fired a shutout on Tuesday night as the Man High School softball team blanked Class AA Westside 2-0 at the Man softball field.

Man improved to 3-1 on the season with the win.

The Lady Billies got all the runs they needed in the bottom of the second inning off Westside hurler Cassie Blakenship while Tomblin shut the door all night long on the Lady Renegades in posting the win.

Tomblin had nine strikeouts and gave up just three hits — two by Logan Osborne and one by Kelsey Walls.

Man rapped out nine hits in the game, led by Kelly Grimmett who had three. Casey Albright had two base knocks, while Madison Keffer, Elizabeth Dickerson, Tabby Ferguson and Emilee Osborne had one hit each.

Keffer got it started in the bottom of the second inning with a single. Ferguson and Osborne each hit into fielder’s choices before Albright delivered what proved to be the game winning hit with an RBI single, scoring Keffer to make it 1-0.

Man then scored another run as Albright stole second and later scored on an RBI single off the bat of Dickerson to make it a 2-0 ballgame.

Tomblin then struck out the side in the top of the third stanza.

Man came back in the bottom of the fourth and had a golden opportunity with runners at second and third and just one out but Dickerson struck out and Blair grounded out to kill the rally.

Tomblin then got Westside out in order in the top of the fifth inning. In the last half of the frame, Man again stranded runners at second and third as Ferguson fanned to end the inning.

The Lady Renegades looked to rally in the sixth as Walls ripped a solid two-out double but then Tomblin got Ashton Lester to line out to end the threat.

In the seventh, Tomblin mowed down Westside one-two-three to end the game.

Man committed no errors in the game. Westside, which fell to 1-4 on the season, had one error.

The Lady Billies are scheduled to return to action this this week’s Lady Tigers Invitational at Chapmanville Regional High School.

Man has four games scheduled beginning with Thursday’s 5 p.m. contest against Class AA No. 2 Ritchie County (7-0). Ritchie was slated to begin play in the tourney with Wednesday night’s clash with the host Chapmanville Lady Tigers.

Man then plays Wahama on Friday at 7 p.m. in the tourney and follows that up with games against Poca and Pikeview on Saturday at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.

After the Chapmanville tourney, the Lady Billies go to Charleston Catholic on April 8, host Class A sectional foe Tug Valley on April 9 and go to Class AAA county rival Logan on April 10 before playing in the Best of the Best tournament at Buffalo April 11-13.
