GOODY, Ky. – The Belfry Pirates swatted the Phelps Hornets 10-0 in baseball action on Friday evening.

Senior Sean Hurley was the starting and winning hurler for the Pirates. He pitched a complete game 4-hit shutout for coach Michael Hagy’s squad.

Belfry took a 4-0 lead in the first inning. Leadoff hitter Keaton Taylor started out things with a walk and then stole second and third and scored the first run on a throwing error by the catcher. Reed Williamson drew a walked and then Zack Francisco singled to center. Joey Duty drove in a run with a single to center field, as Williamson scored.

Zac Fields was safe at first on an error and advanced to third on the throwing miscue. Francisco scored and Duty also scored on the throwing error.

In the bottom of the 2nd inning Belfry’s Cameron Johnson walked, stole second and advanced to 3rd base on throwing error. He then stole home. With one out, Williamson singled to left, Francisco doubled to left and Duty singled to right, scoring Williamson.

In the 3rd inning, with one out, Johnson walked and stole second. Taylor reached safely on an error by the pitcher Chris Stump and Johnson scored. Taylor went to third base and scored on sac fly by Williamson to center fielder Jeremy Orras. Francisco doubled to left center but was thrown out at 3rd base trying to stretch it to triple.

In the bottom of the 5th inning, the Pirate’s Johnson walked tor 3rd time with one out. He then stole his 4th base of game and Taylor had an RBI single to center. After a couple of wild pitches Belfry got another run.

Belfry turned a double play in 3rd inning. Coach Hagy was pleased with his team’s play. With two on and one out, Bailey Hurley grounded to Francisco, who threw to Williamson at 2nd base, forcing Stump. Williamson took the relay and threw to first baseman Madison Ghormley) to retire Hurley and end inning.

Chris Stump, the losing pitcher, was 3-for-3 for Phelps, all singles in first, third and fifth innings, while Gavin Wolford had a single in fifth.

Belfry, now 5-6 on the season, banged out 10 hits in the district win.
