LINCOLN, Neb. – The University of Pikeville women’s bowling team have reached the finals of the xbowling Intercollegiate Team Championships for a third time after a 4-0 win over Wright State University on Friday afternoon.
The win, Pikeville’s second of the day over the Raiders, put them in the best-of-three championship round on Saturday at noon where it would face Maryland-Eastern Shore, which eliminated Wichita State 4-2 and also won its bracket undefeated.
The Bears, under Coach Ron Damron, won both of those previous title-tilt appearances. Those wins, in 2004 and 2008, both came over Wichita State.
Only 5-½ hours after a hard-fought, seven-game win over the Raiders, the Bears opened Game 1 with a spare by junior Ashley Copley and then got a turkey from senior Astrid Valiente, junior Christina Halen and sophomore Brianna Larson to get started on what would be a 193-162 win.
In the second game, the Bears had two open frames but otherwise rolled strikes, including in the final five frames for a 223-168 win. Game Three say Wright Storm out with strikes in five of its first six frames, but the Bears again loaded up and struck from frames five through 10, with senior Brandy Hensley both opening it and closing it in a 236-213 win.
The Raiders opened each of the first three frames of the finale while the Bears filled them all in, and slammed the door shut when Larson struck in nine and Hensley doubled in 10 for a 215-157 decision.
Pikeville had strikes in 22 of its 40 frames and averaged 216.75 for the match.
Larson again paced the Bears, rolling strikes in six of her eight frames. Valiente followed with five, while Halen and Hensley had four each. Copley, from her leadoff spot, finished with three.
