The Logan High School baseball team remained hot on Saturday as the Wildcats grabbed a pair of wins at the George Washington tournament at the George Washington High School baseball field on the school’s Charleston South Hills campus.
Logan (12-4), ranked No. 9 in the state in this week’s Class AAA poll, won 5-3 over Class A Charleston Catholic and also took care of 2A Bridgeport in a 6-1 victory over the Indians.
The Wildcats are 8-1 over their last nine games and have won three straight.
In the win over Charleston Catholic, Logan spotted the Irish a 3-0 first inning lead before plating four runs in the top of the fourth and one in the seventh to get the win.
Troy Burgess was the starting pitcher for Logan. He was relieved by Z. Minnick in the third.
Chase Preston was 2-for-4 for Logan at the plate, while Minnick had a two-run double in the fourth inning. Trace Butcher and Alex Lakatos each had RBI’s.
Charleston Catholic outhit Logan 5-3. The Cats had two errors to one for the Irish.
Minnick and Johnny Morris combined to toss a three-hitter in the victory over Bridgeport. Minnick started and was relieved by Morrison in the seventh.
Minnick led the Logan offense as he went 4-for-4 with a double, a triple and two RBI. Butcher was 2-for-3. Trent Dalton was 2-for-2 with a pair of doubles. Preston went 2-for-3 with a double.
Logan outhit the Indians 13-3 but committed four errors to just one for the Indians.
The Cats were scheduled to return to the diamond with Monday’s home game against new Class AAA sectional rival Nitro. Logan then hosts Scott on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Roger Gertz Field. On Wednesday, Logan goes to St. Albans, its other new sectional opponent, for a 7 p.m. first pitch.
On Thursday, Logan plays at Belfry (Ky.) for a 7 p.m. game before hosting Hurricane on Friday at 7. On Saturday night, the Cats go to Winfield.
