Blackcats outlast PCC in nine innings
HAZARD - Visiting Prestonsburg scored two runs in the top half of ninth inning and prevented Perry County Central from answering to win 5-3 on Tuesday.
Four different Prestonsburg pitchers faced Perry County Central batters. J.D. Adams started on the mound and pitched into the fifth inning for the Blackcats. Travis Powers and Cody Chaffin also faced PCC batters before Trey Stapleton took over on the mound in the bottom half of the seventh inning. Stapleton pitched the seventh, eighth and ninth innings for the Blackcats.
Prestonsburg scored first, pushing across one run in the top half of the second inning.
Perry County Central tied the game with a run of its own in the bottom half of the third inning.
After holding Prestonsburg scoreless in back-to-back plate appearances, Perry County Central scored two runs in the fourth inning.
But not to be outdone, Prestonsburg countered with two runs of its own in the fifth inning to even the score.
Brown and teammate Jarrin Hall, the fifth and sixth hitters, respectively, in the Prestonsburg batting order, reached base and scored in the top half of the ninth inning.
Stapleton, one of the 15th Region’s top pitchers, held Perry County Central scoreless in the bottom of the ninth.
Prestonsburg improved to 17-6 after posting the win. The Blackcats returned to the win column after suffering back-to-back losses to host Johnson Central and Sheldon Clark on Saturday.
Perry County Central had a two-game winning streak snapped, slipping to 7-9 with the loss.
