BETSY LAYNE - Betsy Layne enjoyed one of its best offensive outings of the 2013 Kentucky high school softball season earlier in the week. The Betsy Layne Ladycats returned to the win column on Monday, defeating 15th Region rival Phelps 18-4 in five innings.


Betsy Layne, under the guidance of head coach Kelly Boles, plated two runs in the first inning. Determined Betsy Layne answered Phelps’ lone offensive-heavy inning and pulled away to win the game convincingly.


The Ladycats allowed Phelps to score all four of its runs in the third inning. Betsy Layne, however, pushed across seven runs of its own in the third inning, leading for good after the second offensive outburst.


The Ladycats finished strong to claim the non-district win. Betsy Layne manufactured nine runs in the fourth inning and held Phelps scoreless in the top half of the fifth to post the win.


Betsy Layne pitcher Brandy Morrow, after holding Phelps scoreless in four of five plate appearances, notched the win.


Phelps pitcher Bekka Turner took the loss.


Summer Johnson (triple) and Eddi Akers (double) each had an extra-base hit for for the Ladycats.


Akers and Johnson led the Betsy Layne offense with three RBIs apiece.


Antonia Vance, Chloe Johnson, Mercedes Martin and Emily Kidd each had one RBI for the Ladycats.


Betsy Layne, which won for the second time in three outings, evened its overall record to 6-6 after posting the win.


Phelps, which dropped its fourth straight game, fell to 2-10 following the loss.
