After about a 2 hour rain delay, on what turned out to be a cold, rainy evening at the Lick Creek softball fields in Danville, a battle between two state ranked high school softball teams took place.

Class AA Scott, ranked #3 hosted Class A #3 Sherman in an intra-county matchup on Wednesday, April 24. This was the second meeting of the two teams. Scott took the earlier contest 7-0 back on March 20th at Seth.

It didn’t take long for the scoring to begin when, in the 1st inning, Sherman senior Mackenzie Smith went yard for a 2 RBI homer. A third run was added as Paige Halstead came home on a Hali Jarrell RBI double.

Sherman added 3 more, unearned runs in the 4th inning which were aided along by 2 Scott errors to bring the score to 6-0 in favor of the Lady Tide.

At this point of the game, things looked gloomy, except in the eyes of the Skyhawks. Their “Refuse To Lose” catchphrase kicked in and Scott began their comeback. In the bottom of the 4th inning, Scott lit up the scoreboard with three runs, as Allyson Johnson, Katie Marcum and Sara Browning crossed the plate to bring the game to 6-3.

The Scott defense kicked in and held the Lady Tide scoreless throughout the rest of the game, while the Skyhawks looked for their opportunity to score. It’s never too late to score, but it added to the excitement of the game when Scott waited until the bottom of the 7th inning to make their move.

That move began as senior Jennifer Miller led the inning off with a left field double which was followed by a single by fellow senior Kellian Strange. With runners on 1st and 3rd, another senior Katrina Conley smacked an RBI single into left field bringing the score to 6-4. Bases then became loaded as Chasity Ball drew a walk. Katie Marcum grounded out to the shortstop which allowed another run to cross the plate for Scott making it 6-5. With bases loaded and the Lady Hawks sharpening their talons, Sherman pitching had trouble taking care of the next 2 Scott batters, Sara Browning and Sydney Dangott who drew walks to push Conley across the plate to tie the game at 6-6. Freshman Kaila Craddock came to the plate with 2 outs and bases loaded. Sherman Coach Dave Hendricks made a pitching change to bring in a fresh arm to hold the tie, but Craddock worked to draw a walk, that allowed Chasity Ball to walk home and be the game winner;

After the game, Skyhawks Coach D.A. Harless commented, “That was a total team effort tonight, and we needed that. From top to bottom, with different changes I made through the game, every player was up and into the game. I’m proud of them with their work today”. What made the evening more special was that this was the last regularly scheduled home contest for the seniors on the Skyhawk squad. Scott travels to Falling Rock, WV for a Thursday contest with #1 ranked Herbert Hoover. They open section tournament play Tuesday, April 30 at home against Chapmanville.
