Constitutional rights meeting set for May 7
Daniel Carey of the NRA Foundation will be the featured speaking during a meeting at the Perry County Senior Citizens Building (known As The Log Cabin), located at 354 Perry Park Road in Hazard on Tuesday, May 7 at 7 p.m. Topics of interest will include our rights and the Constitution, how our rights are being violated and what’s to come, and what can we do to help stop this. This meeting is free and open to the public. Anyone that is interested in gun rights and protection of our constitutional rights is urged to attend.
Reception at Bobby Davis Museum and Park
The Bobby Davis Museum and Park, on Walnut Street in Hazard, will be the setting for a reception at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 5 to honor former Mayor Bill Gorman with a retrospective of his life on the eve of his birthday. The drawing for the handmade quilt will also take place on this evening. Wine and cheese will be served.
Lothair Community Church, located at 316 3rd Street in Hazard, will hold its spring revival May 8, 9, and 10 at 6 p.m. each night. Guest speaker will be Luther Dean Whitaker of Williamsburg, Ky., formally of Hazard. Everyone is invited.
Annual basement sale at Bowman
Bowman United Methodist Church will hold its annual basement sale on Thursday, May 2 from 1 to 4 p.m., and again on Friday, May 3 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Yard sale at Frontline Ministries
Frontline Ministries will be having a multifamily yard sale Saturday, May 4 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. All proceeds will go to the Frontline youth department. Frontline is located on top of Coal Harbor Mountain. For more info, see frontlinehazard.com.
Diabetic Support Group meeting
Sarah Jones, RD, will be the guest speaker at the Diabetic Support Group’s meeting on Monday, May 13 at 6 p.m. at the Perry County Public Library. National Day of Prayer

M.C. Napier 1950s & 60s reunion
The M.C. Napier 1950s & 60s class reunion will be held May 17 and 18 at the lodge at Buckhorn Lake State Resort Park. Attendees will meet in the lobby for refreshments and bluegrass music from 7 to 10 p.m. on Friday night. A buffet dinner will be in the conference room at 6:30 p.m. Saturday. The cost of the reunion is $28 per person, or $6 per person if you only wish to attend Friday night and/or after dinner Saturday night. There will be oldies music Saturday night. There will be a family reunion that will be held for Old Man John Shell of Leslie County on June 8 at 11 a.m. at Old Man John Shell’s old home located at 507 Laurel Creek Road, Chappell, KY. Laurel Creek Road is also known as 2009 Road. The family would like to invite anyone that has any history on Old Man John Shell. Auditions for Summer in the Park
Little Theatre of Hazard will hold auditions for the Youth Players Summer in the Park plays on Monday, May 6, Tuesday, May 7, and Thursday, May 9 at 6 p.m. at the stage at Bobby Davis Park on Walnut St in Hazard. Ages 3-18 are invited to audition for two plays this year; one for the 3-11 age group and one for the 12-18 age group. Although selection of the plays is not final, both will be short one act plays and will be performed at ‘Summer in the Park’ on June 22, with a possible additional performance around the 4th of July. You may choose to perform in one or both of the performances, but rehearsals for both performances will be during May and June. Ladies Day event
The Kentucky River District Health Department will host a Lady’s Day Event on Thursday, May 16 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Perry County Health Center. Mother of the Year contest
The Hazard-Perry County Women’s Club will announce Mother of the Year in June and a writing contest is underway now. In 100 words or less, anyone can nominate any mother they know. The contest is open to those mothers who live in Perry County. The 100 words should include the name of the mother, the name and contact information of the person making the nomination, and reasons this mother stands out above all the rest. The nomination should be typed and sent to Hazard-Perry County Women’s Club, P.O. Box 1225, Hazard, KY 41702. The deadline is Friday, May 31. The public announcement of Mother of the Year will be on Saturday, June 8 during the Second Annual Hazard-Perry County Women’s Club Tea Party at First Presbyterian Church between 2 and 4 p.m.
City to begin hydrant testing next month
The Hazard Fire Department will begin its annual fire hydrant testing beginning May 5 through May 18 from the hours of 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. inside the city limits of Hazard. There is a possibility that citizens will notice a change in the water color during this time period due to the hydrant testing. Weekend testing during this time period will be limited to shopping centers and busy streets such as Main Street which cannot be tested during the week. Officials encourage people to hold off doing laundry during these time periods. These tests are required for insurance purposes and to make sure that the hydrants are functional if needed during an actual emergency.

Dilce Combs Grand Reunion
The 19th annual Dilce Combs Grand Reunion will be May 25 at the Whitaker Athletic Center at Jeff. The reunion is for all former students and teachers and provides a wonderful opportunity to visit with old friends. The doors open at 5 p.m. There will be a meal at 6:30. Music from the fifties to the present will begin at 9 p.m. The price of admission will be $20. Career Craze to focus on Energy
A Career Craze Camp will be held for those ages 12 to 15 interested in coal careers. The Coal Career Program will cover the history, development, uses, and environmental concerns associated with the coal industry while exploring future career opportunities available for youth in Eastern Kentucky. The camp will be held at the Technical Campus of Hazard Community and Technical College June 17 to 20. Healthcare Career Craze open to 12 to 15 year olds
Those ages 12 to 15 have a chance to learn about potential careers during the “Career Craze” held at the Technical Campus of Hazard Community and Technical College June 24 to June 27. The sessions will focus on healthcare from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Areas covered include nursing, certified nurse aide, radiography, sonography, surgical tech, physical therapy, and pharmacy programs.
