WAYNE – Mingo Central’s Class AA sectional tournament play got off to a great start with a 13-5 win over Tolsia. Unfortunately it ended in the nightcap of the double header as they were shutout by Wayne 10-0 in the Class AA Region IV, Section 4 softball championship game Monday night at Pioneer Field.


The Lady Pioneers of Wayne were ranked third in the state heading into tourney play this week.


Tolsia didn’t have an answer on Monday, as Mingo Central won in blowout fashion, 13-5 in five innings against the Lady Rebels.


The Lady Miners scored five runs in the 4th frame on an RBI single by catcher Kiearia Hammond, a sacrifice fly by Katilyn Lester, an RBI single by Tiffany Cottle and a couple of passed balls by Tolsia.


Hammond had three hits and drove in three runs, while Kristyn Johnson had a perfect 3-3 at the plate for Mingo Central. Johnson doubled in the 4th inning and singled in the 2nd and 5th innings.


Cottle, Danielle Browning and Paige Muncy also had a pair of hits for MCHS. Muncy also had an RBI.


The Lady Miners collected 12 hits in the five innings.


Senior Kaitlyn Lester got the win for the Lady Miners despite allowing five runs over five innings. Lester, who had missed several games due to an injury, struck out two, walked two and gave up four hits.


Gina Cavins took the loss for Tolsia. Tolsia committed eight errors.


Kasey Endicott launched a high fly to left field for a solo home run to get things going for Wayne. It was Endicott’s seventh homer of the season. This highlighted a four-run 3rd inning, powering Wayne to the 10-0 mercy run-rule victory over Mingo Central.


The Lady Pioneers (24-6) also scored four times in the 2nd and finished off the Miners with two more in the 4th. Wayne pitcher Jessie Rowe held Mingo Central to two hits and struck out nine.


Johnson, a junior shortstop, went 1-2 for MCHS, as she singled in the first inning. Chelsea Lambert had a single in the 3rd to account for Mingo Central’s other hit.


Freshman Kara Lester took the loss for MCHS in the circle, while Wayne’s Rowe got the win.


Wayne, which is seeking to repeat as the Class AA state champ. They will now advance to the regional semifinals. That game will be played Thursday, May 9, on the road against the winner of the Chapmanville-Scott series. Their best-of-three sectional starts Tuesday.


Wayne went 2-0 against Scott and Chapmanville in the regular season.
