ALLEN - Betsy Layne outlasted South Floyd in a 58th District/Floyd County Conference baseball matchup Tuesday evening. The Bobcats, playing at home, plated one run in the bottom half of the ninth inning to edge South Floyd 10-9 in nine innings at Stumbo Park.

Betsy Layne won for the second straight outing, evening its overall record to 7-7 and moving to 2-3 in the 58th District.

South Floyd, which had a four-game winning streak snapped, fell to 7-9 overall and 0-5 in the district.

Betsy Layne senior pitcher Michael Henson worked six innings and recorded a game-high 11 strikeouts.

Freshman Dustin Tackett pitched three innings for the Bobcats.

South Floyd owned multiple leads over Betsy Layne before the game entered extra innings. After each team scored one run in the opening inning, South Floyd outscored Betsy Layne 3-2 in the second to move ahead 4-3. The Raiders, however, continued to produce offensively. South Floyd pushed three runs across in the third inning and added two more in the fourth to lead 9-3.

The Raiders, playing on the road for the first time since April 12, then went quiet at the plate. South Floyd never scored again in the district game.

Betsy Layne scored four runs in the bottom half of the fifth inning and added two more in the sixth to tie the game 9-9.

Neither team scored in the seventh inning as the game was forced to move into an extra inning.

Following a scoreless eighth inning and South Floyd being held in check in the top half of the ninth, Betsy Layne scored in the bottom of the ninth to claim the win.

Henson and Will West led the Betsy Layne offensive with three hits apiece. Kannon Newsome added two hits and three RBIs for the Bobcats.

Jacob Crager led the South Floyd offense with four RBIs. Marcus Gayhart added three RBIs for the Raiders.

South Floyd pitcher Jacob Johnson worked 8.1 innings and suffered the loss. Johnson, who was able to get ahead early on opposing batters by throwing 29 first pitch strikes, registered 10 strikeouts in the losing effort.
