Margaret Hoskins Kennedy, 100, of Williamson, died peacefully on Thursday, May 2, 2013 at her West End home, surrounded by her family.
Born April 7, 1913 at Pineville, Bell County, Ky., she was the daughter of the late Wilburn and Gwen Cranmore Hoskins.
In addition to her parents, Margaret was preceded in death by her husband, Mike Kennedy, son, Donald Kennedy, daughter, Charlotte Mabe, brothers, Arthur and Grover Hoskins, a grandson, Charles “Little French” Mabe III, a son-in-law, Charles “French” Mabe, Jr., and a daughter-in-law, Sue Chapman Kennedy.
Margaret was a retired educator, having served the youth of the Tug Valley and beyond for over 60 years of her life. She began her teaching career in Harlan County, Ky. during the 1930s before moving to the Island Creek area of Logan County, where she taught at the community of Crystal Block. After relocating to Pond Creek, Ky., she taught seventh and eighth grade English and Science at Stone Elementary School for many years, and was an active and faithful member of Stone Methodist Church. She later helped to establish the Jack & Jill Preschool of Williamson, where she taught until moving to Louisville, Ky. following the death of her husband. During her residence there, Margaret continued to impact the lives of children, working at Tots & Toddlers Daycare until her retirement in the mid-1990s. She also remained active in the Order of the Eastern Star until her health began to decline in the last decade of her life, whereupon her family moved her back to the Tug Valley.
Margaret is survived by a daughter, Ginny Davis, of Williamson, grandchildren, Sondra Greer of Lexington, Ky., Paul Price III of Canada, Ky., Gary M. Davis of Williamson, Brad Davis of Williamson, and Chris Kennedy of Jeffersonville, Ind., great grandchildren, Jeremy Greer of Lexington, Ky., Jason Greer of Orlando, Fla., Jennifer and Michelle Price, both of Colorado, and Micah Davis of Lexington, Ky., a son-in-law, Gary Davis of Williamson, and a sister-in-law, Cooke Hoskins of Colorado. She is also survived by several great-great grandchildren, as well as a host of wonderful friends and caregivers.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, May 5, 2013 from 6-9 p.m. at Weaver Mortuary of West Williamson.
Funeral services will be conducted on Monday, May 6, 2013, at 11 a.m. at Weaver Mortuary, with Pastor Brad Davis of Kermit United Methodist Church officiating.
Burial will follow at Powell Valley Memorial Gardens of Big Stone Gap, Va.
Grandchildren and great grandchildren will serve as pallbearers.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations in Margaret’s name be made to Dignity Hospice (P.O. Box 4304, Chapmanville, WV 25508) and/or the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (alzfdn.org), or any other dementia-related charity.
