The region tennis tournament was held this past weekend at Whitesburg. Teams from across the region competed for a shot at the state tournament, and when the smoke had cleared, Hazard’s Natalie Morton stood atop the girls’ singles division, earning a trip to the state competition.

Morton, the region’s top seed, began the quest with a match-up against Knott Central’s Callie Chaney. Morton blew through the contest, matching her against Megan Hall of June Buchanan.

Morton got off to a bit of a slow start against Hall, but quickly got into a rhythm. The win put her in the semifinals on Sunday.

Because of rain, the final day of play was moved to the Pavilion in Hazard. Morton started the day with Brittany Wright of Letcher. It would be the toughest match of the tournament to date, but Morton was able to pull out the convincing win.

All that stood between Morton and the region title now was Kennidi Damron of Knott County Central. The first set was tight, but Morton stood strong and came away with the 6-4 win. The momentum was now clearly on Morton’s side of the court, and she did not let up. Set number two, and the title, went to Morton as she cruised to the 6-2 win.
