The Big Sandy Community and Technical College Honors Program seeks to provide an intellectually challenging college experience for students who are self-motivated; are in search of a higher level of knowledge; want to gain wisdom and help others achieve wisdom; and who love to go above and beyond the basic core requirements in life’s challenge.

That is exactly what John Simms, 25, from Ocean Springs, Miss., and Dimitri Aime Bien, 25, from Green Acres, Fla., did.

Simms received an award for his efforts on honors night, held at the college on April 12.

Simms said he was tired of dead-end jobs and needed some direction and guidance in his life. That is when he decided to enter the Job Corps program. Simms has completed the HVAC trade and Work Base Learning at Stone Crest Golf Course for two summers, while not in college.

Simms said going to Job Corps has helped him grow as a person and stay focused on his school work and kept his 3.7 GPA. He said if he hadn’t gone to Job Corps, he would still be working at dead-end jobs and hanging around the wrong people. His future plans are to return to Mississippi and continue his education in the HVAC trade and find employment in that field.

Bein also received his award on Honors night.

Bein went to Job Corps for the opportunity to get a trade and possibly go to college. He said that Job Corps has given him the opportunity to go to college fulltime and not have to worry about trying to work and go to school at the same time. He stated that he has been able to give 100 percent of his time to studying, which is why he has been able to obtain a 4.0 GPA.

Bein said Job Corps has made him appreciate everything he has and the opportunities he has gotten since enrolling in the program. His future plans are to further his education in Business Administration and Chemistry.
