“Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it” (Proverbs 22:6).

I have a problem with Mother’s Day! It’s not that I don’t like Mother’s Day, or that I disagree with it is or that I dread it. My problem is that I don’t know how to preach a good Mother’s Day sermon. Mother’s Day is perhaps for me is the most difficult sermon to preach all year. I have preached many Mother’s Days sermons and written many Mother’s Day articles.

Why is it hard to preach a Mother’s Day message? Mother’s Day can be a very happy and joyous day for some and it can also be a very sad day and a day of pain and grief.

Not are some who looks forward to Mother’s Day and many of you know what I am talking about.

Maybe you have recently lost your Mother and you are experiencing the pain of your lost. My mother is alive and I thank God for that! Maybe you have lost a child and your heart grieves on Mother‘s Day, or maybe you are having difficulties with your Mother. Some Mother’s wasn’t the ideal Mother. We like to preach about Mother’s and maybe you have bad memories of your Mother, or maybe you have guilt feelings about your motherhood or maybe have a bad marriage. Maybe you were never able to have children and Mother’s Day isn’t a joyous occasion for you. Maybe you are a single Mom and you struggling with being a good Mother to your children.

Not every home is like the “Brady Bunch” or “Father Knows Best” many of you don’t know who these people are. Those of us who was born in 40’s on know who they are. I must say that some home are more like the “Ozzie Osbourne Family.” Some of you have been raised in good Christian home and have wonderful parents. I thank God you have had one and you should thank God, too.

Motherhood has in one way or not has affected you. I have a message for you today from God. We send our Mothers a Card on Mother’s day. It’s very important what’s written in a Mother’s Day Card. My Mother always tells me what a beautiful Card I would give her. We all know that most Mother’s Day Cards have a little message printed inside of them. You go to a great care to pick out one that matches your mother. When your Mother open up her card, will she like the words that are inside of the card? How about these words, “Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28). Mother’s you won’t find “rest” by hiding in the closet or by locking yourself in the bathroom. You’ll find “rest” in Jesus, “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble” (Psalm46:1). Mothers are you getting to the end of your rope don’t hang yourself, instead come to Jesus for some much deserved rest.

I think of the women in the Old and New Testament like Sarah, Rebekah, Leah, Rahab, Ruth, and Abigail, among the other women who have been in the same circumstances beyond their control, but they also found that God is faithful in the midst of the all of their difficult trials. I think of Lois the grandmother and Eunice the mother of Timothy. They believed what Solomon wrote, “Train up a child in the way he should go; and when he is old he will not depart from it” (Proverbs 22:6). What mothers need to do is what these women did in the Bible, hang on to God’s promise. No matter what kind of situation you find yourself in, God’s Word is true; Trust it. And raise your children by God‘s Word..

I am persuaded that many Christian moms are most excellent Christians, who do a really good job of training your children. But, I see some who have developed into something in our culture that many moms have not successfully adapted to. It’s a thing call adolescence.

Let these woman, and the many others I could have made mention from God’s Word. Be an encouragement to each and every one of you moms and grandmothers. When you feel faint-hearted, don’t quit. When you feel that all is lost, don’t give up, no matter what kind of situation you find yourself in, God’s Word is true. Trust in it. And raise your children by it.
