LOUISA, Ky. – The Belfry Pirates whipped the Lawrence County Bulldogs 7-1 Thursday evening in high school baseball action.

This is the first time Belfry has ever beaten Lawrence County on their home field and only the second time they had ever beaten the Bulldogs, according to longtime scorekeeper Bennett West.

The win evened Belfry’s record to 15-15 and that puts them at .500 with one regular season game left.

Sophomore Keaton Taylor, the winning pitcher, helped his own cause by getting on base with an infield single. He then stole second base to get into scoring position.

Reed Williamson then singled to center field and Taylor scored on a throwing error by Bulldog outfielder Noah Lambert. Williamson went to third on the error and he scored on a sacrifice fly by Belfry’s Zack Francisco.

Those first two runs proved to be all that Belfry would need.

However, in the 3rd inning, Belfry added to its lead. With one out, Francisco walked, then stole second and scored on a Joey Duty RBI single to left field. Eli Huddle then lined a single down the third base line. With two outs, Duty and Huddle scored when Zac Fields hit the ball to right fielder Ryan Kingsmore, who misplayed the ball.

The Pirates increased their lead to 5-0 heading into the 4th inning.

In the 4th inning, with one out, Taylor singled to left field, followed by a single from Williamson. Duty was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Huddle got an RBI on a sac fly to left field scoring Williamson. Taylor had scored on an error by the second baseman Brock Turner.

Belfry led 7-0 at that point in the game.

In the 6th frame, Lawrence County got a single from Turner and he eventually scored on an error by Fields.

Taylor pitched six innings giving up five hits to pick up the win. Fields pitched a scoreless 7th inning for Belfry to end the game.

Joe Wallen was the losing pitcher for the Dogs. Lawrence County is now 20-11 on the season.

The Pirates were scheduled to travel to Inez, Ky. to take on Sheldon Clark on Friday evening. They will host Phelps at home on Monday for the start of the 60th District tournament.
