GOODY, Ky. – The Belfry Pirates swatted the Phelps Hornets out of the 60th District baseball tournament 13-0 on Monday at the BHS sports complex.

Belfry jumped out to a 7 to 0 lead in the 2nd inning.

Belfry’s Joey Duty reached safely on an error by third baseman Tate Compton. Then Eli Huddle was safe on sacrifice bunt attempt and another Phelps error. Madison Ghormley reached first base on a fielder’s choice, as Duty was thrown out at third base. Then Zac Fields got an RBI single to left field.

Sean Hurley knocked in two runs with a single to right field, and Keaton Taylor lined an RBI single to center. The rally continued as Reed Williamson had a single to center, Taylor stole third base and scored on a wild pitch by Zack Avina.

Zack Francisco kept the barrage going for the Pirates with a single to left field. Williamson scored on another error by the Hornets. Duty then lashed an RBI single to right field.

In the 3rd inning Belfry’s Huddle led off with single to center field, Ghormley followed with a walk and Fields cracked an RBI single to right. Hurley followed with an RBI single to center and Caleb Stanley smacked an RBI single to left field. Then Taylor was hit by a pitch to reach first base.

Williamson reached safely on a fielder’s choice, as Garrett Fannin was thrown out at third base. Then Francisco sliced a single to left to bring in two more runs.

Phelps had two hits, one by Avina, a single in 1st frame and a single by Kyle Sneed in the 4th inning.

Fields was the winning hurler for Belfry, while Avina took the loss for Phelps.

Belfry is scheduled to play Pike County Central this evening (Wednesday) at the BHS field. The game time is slated for 8 p.m. , weather permitting.

The two teams split their two regular season games. Belfry, now 16-16 on the season, won at home 4-3, while the Hawks won at home by an identical score of 4-3 later in the regular season. Pike Central is now 18-15 heading into the district tourney. Both the district tourney champs and the runner-up teams will advance to the regional tournament.
