When House Finance Chairman Harry Keith White, D-Mingo, announced his candidacy this week for the House of Delegates speaker position, we weren’t surprised. In our mind, he’s the right man for the job.

Supporting White goes far beyond casting a vote for one of our own. We realize how important the Speaker of the House position is and it needs to be filled with someone who is competent and will do the job justice. We consider White to be that person.

White’s resume is impressive. He has served more than 20 years in the House, including the past seven as Finance Committee chairman. He was first elected in 1992. White is also the President of the Bank of Mingo.

Born and raised in Gilbert, White understands the state of West Virginia about as well as anyone we can think of. Current Speaker Rick Thompson, D-Wayne, said he would resign on June 15 to accept an appointment as secretary of the state Department of Veterans Assistance.

If you’ve ever talked to White it only takes a matter of minutes to realize he’s an articulate, well-spoken person who has a great grasp on the issues facing our state. As chairman of the finance committee he’s had to work with both sides in the House and his leadership and ability to compromise is proven.

His experiences in office are definitely an advantage to his candidacy. White has served under five governors, two speakers and three finance chairs.

There will be a number of important issues facing our elected officials during the next session, so we need someone with White’s experience as the Speaker.

White probably said it best himself: “I think I’m qualified to take the next step, I’m ready to take the helm as the Speaker of the House.”

We couldn’t agree more.
