We are now about to determine whether I can write a coherent column on my cell phone while in my hospital room. Of course there is some question as to whether I can write a coherent piece under ANY conditions.

Be that as it may, rumors of my death literally and figurately are greatly exaggerated.

To briefly explain, I became very ill last week and was unable to write. Then, on Monday I tripped on a rug at my home. I apparently hit my head on the door face and lay unconcious for 12 hours. When I awoke I was unable to walk. I had dropped my cell phones when I fell and couldn’t find them. I was stuck.

So I intermittenly screamed for help and slept until my neighbor finally heard my calls Wednesday night.

From there, the ambulance took me to Boone Memorial Hospital, where my doctor practices. My doc, State Senator Ron Stollings, was not on call and it was soon determined I needed a larger health facility.

I was whisked to St. Marys Medical Center in Huntington, where I remain at press time.

I am recovering well and appreciate all the help and kind words I have received. God is good.

Meanwhile, Delegate Harry Keith White managed to essentially win the nod as the new House Speaker. White was already the odds-on favorite for the job left vacant by the resignation of Speaker Rick Thompson.

He sewed it up when Kanawha Delegate Doug Skaff through his support to White Thursday.

Thompson is leaving for one of those cushey jobs governors keep for former legislators.

Politics can be a tough occupation. Old grudges and antagonisms often fan up. One has to take all political tidbits — even those in this column — with the proverbial grain of salt.

I have no inside knowledge of the wild accusations being tossed about in Mingo County but I urge caution.

It seems the latest turn in West Virginia politics is to report political enemies to the ethics commission. Ethics is, dear reader, in the eyes of the beholder.

Since I am limited here, this will be a short column. Remember, though, I appreciate your calls, news and tips to either my email address or my cell, 304-533-5185. Gosh, my finger is worn out.
