“Dark Skies” — Science fiction meets haunted house horror in this well-crafted flick that ought provide scares for most of the family. A family experiences several strange episodes of things going bump in the night They soon learn they are being targeted by a strange force which means to them in. Can’t give anymore away, but his is a well-paced fright flick.Keri Russell stars.

“The Star Chamber” — Vigilante justice flicks don’t get much better than this suspense yarn. Michael Douglas stars as an idealistic judge who begins to see an unfair pattern emerging, whereby criminals avoid prosecution due to loopholes in the law. A friend picks up on this disenchantment and invites him to join a group that sees justice meted out to those that they feel have escaped it. A seasoned cast includes Hal Holbrook as the friend and the always dependable Yaphet Kotto (“Alien”) as a dogged detective.

“Shoot First, Die Later” — The 1970s were an awesome time for crime flicks. That was also the case in Italy, where this crime drama was a box office hit. This gritty shoot’em-up finally lands a DVD release and is a real treat for action drama fans who want the good stuff. The plot finds a dirty cop working for thugs until his devoted dad finds out what his son is up to. Will dad’s disappointment help him straighten out, or is he doomed? Either way, it’s an excuse for awesome car chases and violent gunplay from the great Fernando Di Leo.

“Dr. Who and the Snowmen” — The latest incarnation of the popular British sci-fi series takes on a gang of frosty evildoers in this Christmas-themed episode. The show begins with the Doctor hiding out in 1892 London after a series of events have left him on his own. He winds up pulling his head out of the sand when a series of attacks turn out to be the work of an evil genius who can animate snowmen. Fun stuff and a great introduction to the series for prospective fans.
