BELFRY - Prestonsburg blanked tournament host Belfry 3-0 in the 15th Region Tournament title game Thursday evening. The Prestonsburg baseball program captured its first region championship since 1984. Prestonsburg won the state championship in 1948.

Sophomore pitcher Jarin Hall and senior reliever Cody Chaffin combined to toss a shutout to lead the Blackcats past Belfry.

Chaffin went to the mound and worked the final inning for the Blackcats.

Belfry pitcher Zach Fields suffered the loss.

Prestonsburg, the champion out of the 58th District, took an early 1-0 lead. Leadoff hitter Grant Anderson started the game with a single and eventually scored on an error to give the visiting Blackcats a 1-0 lead.

The contest then went scoreless until the sixth inning. Anderson led off the sixth inning with a triple. Then, Bryson Williams legged out another triple with Anderson scoring in front of him.

Williams scored on a wild pitch to give the Blackcats a 3-0 lead.

Chaffin was able to hold Belfry scoreless in the game’s final at-bat.

Prestonsburg advanced to play 13th Region Champion North Laurel in the opening round of the Forcht Bank/KHSAA State Baseball Tournament at Whitaker Bank Ballpark in Lexington at 1:30 p.m. Monday afternoon.

Apollo, Mercer, Henderson County, Letcher County Central, Collins, Tates Creek, Ashland Blazer, Pleasure Ridge Park, St. Xavier, Logan County, Harrison County, Ryle, Lone and Central Hardin also advanced to the state baseball tournament.
