MATEWAN - In downtown Historic Matewan, the streets will be crowded this weekend and local shops and businesses will be bustling as the town plays host to a portion of the 14th annual Hatfield and McCoy Reunion Festival Marathon.


On Thursday, June 6 through Saturday the 8th visitors wishing to take advantage of the Hatfield-McCoy Adventure Tours will view feud sites made famous by the bloody battles between the two families. To reserve your spot on the tour, you are asked to call 304-427-4700.


Beginning on Friday evening and carrying on throughout the weekend will be the Civil War Encampment with a Civil War Skirmish slated for Saturday at noon. The half-marathon runners will flock into Matewan to start their 13.1 mile race at 8 a.m. Saturday morning. Live entertainment will be performing for the public all day long, with local favorites Jimmy Wolford ( 1 p.m. and again at 5 p.m.), Jim Lloyd and Hunter Wyatt (1 and 4 p.m.) and Glen Simpson singing at 6 p.m.


Homemade ice cream will be sold on the street throughout the day-long event and corn-hole and horseshow enthusiasts are invited to compete for prizes. Street vendors will be peddling their wares and will be open for business beginning at 8 a.m. A delicious Pig Roast that is sure to be worth feudin’ over will be located on Main Street, just follow the lip-smackin’ aroma!


From 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. the youngsters will enjoy taking turns inside a variety of inflatables, while the adults will want to be on hand to witness an good ole’ fashioned Shotgun Wedding that will take place on the steps of the Town Hall with a reception to follow inside that will feature all the trimmings.


The popular and highly-competitive “Tug of War” between the descendants of the Hatfield and McCoy clans will be held across the Tug River at 2 p.m., with the loosing family taking a cool dip in the water. This event will be followed by the reenactment of the Hatfield-McCoy Battle of Grapevine at 3:30 p.m.


Local beauties will take the stage at 4 p.m. to compete in the Hatfield and McCoy Beauty Pageant for the final event of the day.
