The Logan County Commission is providing lunch for three free diabetes education classes during the month of June. Hosting the classes will be Traci Gillispie RN and Gina Clark LPN with the West Virginia Medical Institute’s Everyone with Diabetes Counts (EDC) program.

“I think probably one of the biggest problems where the county is concerned… as far as health… is diabetes,” Danny Godby, president of the Logan County Commission, said. “We felt as a commission that these classes would educate, as far as proper eating and habits to try to destroy as much as possible this dreaded disease. I’ve had family members with diabetes and it is a dreadful disease.”

Although the EDC program is funded through Medicare, the classes are free to anyone who has diabetes or is a caretaker of a person with diabetes.

“Medicare is funding a special project called Everybody with Diabetes Counts,” Clark said. “West Virginia was chosen because of its high rate of diabetes. In West Virginia, Logan, Boone, Lincoln and Wayne Counties are among the highest.”

Clark said the EDC will travel throughout the state’s 13 most southern counties teaching classes to anyone.

“We will be teaching classes to anyone, not just Medicare recipients,” Clark said. “The Logan County Commission is partnering with us to provide diabetic education classes to Logan County residents free of charge on June 12, 19 and 26 at noon.”

Clark encourages anyone with diabetes, has a relative that is diabetic or a caretaker of a diabetic to attend the free classes.

“The Logan County Commission has been gracious enough to provide a free lunch to anybody who attends,” Clark said.

Clark said each class will be about an hour long. Space is limited and registration is required.

“The last day to register for the classes is Monday, June 10,” Clark said.

To register, call the Logan County Health Department at 304-792-8630 between the hours of 8:30 a.m.-noon and from 1-4:30 p.m.

Participants in the classes can expect to learn about diabetes and its risks, the role of diet and exercise, the importance of regular doctor exams and annual foot and eye exams, how to maintain willpower in a world of temptations and how to manage medications. For more information on the classes, call 304-687-5683.

The WVMI EDC also teaches free diabetes every Thursday at Logan Regional Medical Center. Registration for these classes can be made at 304-346-9864, ext. 3221.
