PIKEVILLE - A Pike County man is dead, and alcohol may be the cause, following a weekend accident where police say the vehicle he was driving upended into a creek after striking another vehicle.

According to Kentucky State Police officials, troopers received a call Saturday of a two vehicle accident on KY 197 in the Elkhorn Creek community.

Troopers say that Arnold F. Stapleton, 41, of Elkhorn Creek was traveling north on KY 197 when a Cadillac traveling north operated by Selina Baker of Elkhorn Creek slowed to turn into a private drive. Stapleton’s vehicle struck the rear of the Cadillac and traveled over one mile before dropping off the right shoulder of the roadway. Information collected at the scene by troopers indicates that Stapleton over-corrected, crossed the roadway and overturned coming to rest in the creek.

Stapleton was pronounced dead by Pike County Deputy Coroner Denver Bailey. Police say that alcohol was determined to be a factor in the collision.

The accident remains under investigation by the Kentucky State Police.
