On Friday, June 7, Carl D. Perkins Job Corps students took their training to a new height.

Throughout the day, students had the opportunity to participate in the “Challenge Course program,” which gives students the opportunity to develop a host of skills that are not easily taught in the traditional classroom, such as communication, trust and support, goal setting, problem solving, and leadership skills.

The staff participate as well.

“It is good to see the staff conquer their fears along with their students,” said Ricky Yates, Perkins electrical instructor.

The primary or underlying goal of the program is to enable participants to see themselves competent, capable and self-reliant people who can take risks and survive momentary setbacks. Although many of the tasks are physically challenging, participation in the challenge course program is not about testing physical abilities, competition, or placing limitations on one’s self or others.
