RICEVILLE — Gov. Steve Beshear and First Lady Jane Beshear will be in Johnson County Saturday, officially opening the first rail-trail in the Big Sandy region.
The Beshears will take part in a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 10 a.m. with state and local officials. The event will serve as the official opening of the first section of the Dawkins Line Rail Trail.
The Dawkins Line is a former railroad bed that has been converted to a recreational trail for hiking, biking and horseback riding. The first half of the trail has been completed and runs from Paintsville to Royalton. Eventually, the trail will extend into Breathitt County, for a total of 36 miles.
The Kentucky Department of Parks will manage the trail.
