Chaffin, a left-handed pitcher, ranked as one of the state’s top closers in 2013, helping Prestonsburg capture the 15th Region championship.
Pikeville competes in the Mid-South Conference, along with Cumberland, Georgetown, Lindsey Wilson, Campbellsville, Rio Grande, St. Catharine, Cumberlands, Shawnee State, UVA-Wise and Bluefield.
The Bears finished the 2013 season 18-26-1 overall. Pikeville compiled a 6-15 record in the Mid-South Conference.
The University of Pikeville baseball program is under the guidance of Chad Gassman, who came to Pikeville after spending five seasons as head coach of Waldorf College in Forest City, Iowa, where his Warriors posted the first .500 record in school history last season.
Gassman is a 2000 graduate of Morehead State University, where he was a member of the university’s baseball team. After assistant coaching stops at Olivet Nazarene (Ill.) University and Young Harris (Ga.) College, he has spent five seasons as the head coach at Waldorf.
Gassman was named pitching coach of the Hyannis Harbor Hawks of the Cape Cod Baseball League in 2008 and took over the following season as the team’s head coach. This season, the Hawks won the Western Division with Gassman taking Coach of the Year honors.
