Last year the LEAD organization was able to provide 150 school children with vouchers to purchase shoes at the beginning of the school year. This year, the organization is aiming to supply 250 students with vouchers.

On Tuesday afternoon, the Logan County Sheriff Department deputies donated $1,000 towards the school fund.

“We were able to give the LEAD Community Organization a $1,000 towards their shoe vouchers,” N.M. Booth said. “With our Shop with a Deputy every year, we set a goal to take so many kids. Once we hit that, there are times when we end up with a surplus of money. So try to redistribute back into the community.”

Booth said that the Shop with a Deputy fund has contributed to several projects lately, including Little League signs, contributing to the Special Olympics and to the Sons of the American Legion Easter Egg Hunt by purchasing some bicycles.

Ojeda, who made the military his career, began his shoe distribution campaign while serving in Afghanistan where donations of shoes were sent to him. He distributed thousands of pairs of shoes to the Afghanistan children.

“The LEAD Community Organization is extremely proud to be working with the sheriff’s deputies and the Sheriff’s Association,” Ojeda said. “The main goal here is for children whose parents don’t have the means to purchase nice shoes for them to start school… now they will be able to. This check will send about 40 children to school with their head held high and not worrying about his shoes.”

Ojeda said the shoe fund is not just for Logan County.

“If somebody in Mingo County needs a new pair of shoes, we will not turn anybody away,” Ojeda said. “If there are any miners out there that has been laid off, if they don’t have the money to send their kids to school with new shoes, we will be able to step up and take of that for them.”

To apply for a voucher, forms can be picked up at the LEAD office located in the PRIDE office in Logan. Or they can be found on their website, www.leadcommunityorg.com or facebook page at www.facebook.com/LEADorg/
