Ashford Nellis Neighborbood Watch meeting


Ashford Nellis Neighborhood Watch meeting will be Tuesday, June 25th, at 6 p.m. at the Nellis Church Archives.


Boone County 4-H Camp


Boone County 4-H Camp will be held July 21-26 at Glenwood Park in Princeton, WV. Camp is open to all county youth ages 9 (finished 3rd grade) to 21, and no prior experience in 4-H is required before attending.


The cost for camp is $50 for full price and $20 for those who qualify for free or reduced lunch, and scholarships are available for those with financial need. Transportation to camp is also provided.

Reunion


A Graley, Payne, Barker and Bush family reunion is planned for Saturday, July 20, at the Dartmont Park, beginning at noon.


Please bring a covered dish and spend the afternoon with family members and friends.


The 31st annual Nellis-Armco and the 7th Nellis Grade School Reunion


The 31st annual Nellis-Armco and the 7th Nellis Grade School Reunion is scheduled for Saturday, June 29, at the Nellis Elementary School gym, beginning at noon.


Food and soft drinks will be available.


A gospel sing with the Happy Valley Boys will begin at 10:30 a.m. at the Nellis Church Archives.


Officials urge everyone to make plans to attend the popular annual event.

Step By Step and Bully-Free West Virginia are excited to announce our third West Virginia Anti-Bullying Summit. We encourage anyone involved in the educational system in some capacity to attend this event. This includes but is not limited to teachers, school counselors, social workers, principals, superintendents, and resource officers.


Bullying prevention summit


The specific focus of the summit will be on bullying & prevention across West Virginia.


The event will be held at the Chapmanville Middle school in Logan County, on Tuesday June 25th 2013 9:30 am until 4:45 pm. The cost is $65 per person, which will include lunch and materials. The Anti-bullying summit is approved for 6 CEU hours for resource officers. Each participant will receive a certificate of attendance. Please submit your registration form with money no later than June 14th 2013. Only checks will be accepted and should be made out to Step By Step with Bully Free WV in the memo line. Whitesville celebration


The Town of Whitesville will be celebrating the State of West Virginia Birthday June 20th.


The town will be providing free hot dogs and cake from 6 to 8 p.m. Free music provided by Pushed Beyond from 6 to 9 p.m.


This will take place at the Salamy Building and the Miners Park. Please bring your lawn chair and help the town celebrate the states Birthday.


Neighborhood Watch meeting at Griffiths Branch


The next meeting will be held July 16, 2013, at Griffiths Branch Church of Christ in Uneeda at 6 p.m. Monthly meetings to be held the third Tuesday of every month starting in July.


Caregivers can get support in Boone County


Caring for someone with a serious illness, such as dementia, cancer, lung disease, heart disease, aging frailty, etc., can be hard work.


The Palliative Care Center has partnered with the Bureau of Senior Services to provide FREE Basic Caregiver Workshops throughout Boone County.


This 2- hour Workshop is for you if….


• Someone you care for has a serious illness


• You’re not sure how to begin or what to do next


• You have lots of questions and trouble finding answers


• You’re feeling overwhelmed or alone or stressed


• You’re considering becoming a paid caregiver


You’ll learn……


• Expert tips that make caregiving easier and safer


• Information on planning ahead so you can have control, even in a crisis


• About specific resources in your community that you can turn to for help


Here are a few comments from everyday people who have attended these workshops:


• “I learned some specific things that will help me take care of my Dad.”


• “The Community Resource Guide looks wonderful, I had no idea these things were available.”


• “It was good to come and talk with other caregivers, nice to know I’m not alone.”


Nurse Carol Matheny, RN, MSN, CHPN, will be teaching the classes. People who have attended her classes describe her as “very knowledgeable and informative”, “a good teacher”, and “nice and personable.”


Nurse Practitioner Vickie Powell, FNP-BC, CHPCA, Director of the Palliative Care Center, said, “We saw that caregivers often had the same concerns, questions, and dilemmas, but had a hard time getting the help they needed. That’s why we created the classes. We want to support the caregiver. When you support the caregiver, you’re helping the patient.”


These classes are provided free thanks to a grant from the Kanawha Valley Council on Philanthropy Community Initiative.

The quarterly meeting of the Boone County Housing Authority and Redevelopment Authority will be held on Tuesday, June 11, 2013, at 6 p.m., at Black Diamond Arbors in Danville.

The WV Statewide Independent Living Council meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, June 5, 2013 at 9 a.m. to noon at the Division of Rehabilitation Services office at 10 McJunkin Road, Nitro in the Conference Room on the third floor.


Sherman High School’s classes reunion


Sherman High School’s classes of 1950, 1951, and 1952 will hold its Class Reunion on Saturday, September 14, 2013 at the Holiday Inn & Suites (formerly Ramada Inn) in South Charleston. Once again, members of the Sherman classes of the 1940’s are invited to attend.

BCARSE meeting


The Boone County Association of Retired School Employees (BCARSE) will meet Wednesday, July 17, 2013, at Park Avenue Restaurant in Danville.


A historian from the Capitol’s Cultural Arts Center will have the program. A great celebration of West Virginia’s 150th birthday will be observed, as well as our nation’s birthday. Come prepared for a celebratory time. Delores Cook will present the devotion.


Door prizes will be won and the 50/50 will be available. Special coins will be given to those that hold the “lucky number.”


Diabetic Support Group


This group is sponsored by the Boone Co. Health Dept. and meets each month on the second Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Madison-Danville Nutrition Center at Lick Creek.


If you are a diabetic or someone you love is, joint us for informative programs, fun and fellowship. On occasion, we have “diabetic friendly” foods.


The next meeting is scheduled for Wed., July 10 at 2 p.m. at the Nutrition Center. The program will be presented by Ms. Liz Lawson, RN, from the Boone Co. Health Dept., titled “Vacation eating.” Free and helpful literature for diabetic living is available.


Volunteers needed


Western Regional CASA reaches Kanawha, Lincoln, Boone, Putnam, Cabell, and Wayne Counties. CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) is a non-profit organization that desires for every child in abuse/neglect proceedings to receive a permanent residence. Volunteers gather information and advocate on the behalf of the children within a case.


Right now, Boone County is looking for volunteers, so come help reach that many more children in our communities.
