Dust off your old cleats. Strap up your helmet.

There is a call out for all former Williamson, Matewan, Burch and Gilbert football players. Alumni football is coming to the Williamson and Mingo County area.

Gridiron Alumni is planning several full contact alumni football games. Gridiron Alumni travels the nation pitting old football rivals against each other one more time. Players are needed to sign up and the first 50 paid players on each team get to play.

The team that gets 30 people registered first gets home field advantage.

Just last week, hundreds of fans swarmed Inez, Ky., at Sheldon Clark’s football stadium to watch their hometown heroes from Belfry and Sheldon Clark strap it on one more time.

Gridiron Alumni is now seeking local Williamson area players for its Gridiron Alumni Rivalry Series. Teams from some of the most heated rivalries in the state are forming now.

There is already talk of a Matewan-Gilbert game, but others would like to see at Williamson-Burch alumni football game too.

“You must be 18 years old and over. Since it is alumni football, we prefer that you play for the team you went to high school with,” said spokesman Chris Hall. “We require that teams have at least 75 percent alumni. We don’t want to punish people who have put down their roots, but please don’t go out and recruit ‘ringers’ that didn’t go to the school. The goal is to make this an annual event and that can really ruin a game and make it so that it doesn’t happen the next year.”

The first two teams with 30 paid players from Williamson, Matewan, and Gilbert will square off in August or September. Those alumni and other area teams are invited to register. If you or someone you know is interested in putting on the pads one more time, please go to www.gridironalumni.com to register.

“The player fee includes your equipment rental, which includes shoulder pads, helmets, jerseys, pants, girdles, hip pads, thigh pads, knee pads and tailbone pads. We provide locker room personnel, gate workers, referees, and more. Since we are not affiliated with the schools, we also pay for stadium insurance costs and rent the field. Players can pay at any time by going to our website,” Hall added.

“We usually max out at 50 players on each side, but require at least 30 on each team in order to make it a game. After 50 players, people start complaining about playing time. We have made some special exceptions though,” Hall said.

The company will do everything from beginning to end with organizing the game. They reserve the field, hire the officials and provide equipment with the exception of personal mouth pieces and cleats/turf shoes.

Spots fill up fast, so don’t miss out. If you have any questions, please call Chris at (530) 410-6396 or go to the website.
