The Madison One baseball team captured the Little League District Two title for seven and eight-year-olds with a 6-3 win over Man in the title game, Sunday, June 30.

The victory gave Madison a perfect 5-0 record during the Coach Pitch tournament at Chapmanville. They went 2-0 in pool play with a 26-0 win over Mullins and a 13-9 victory over Man in a game shortened to five innings because of the Little League curfew.

Madison started the tournament bracket with a 21-2 win over Matewan and followed with a 15-5 decision over Pineville.

In the championship game on Sunday, Man opened up the scoring in the top of the first with a single by Diezel Cook, who later scored on a hit by Jacob Walls. Madison started their half of the first with a single by lead-off batter Hunter Dolin but the team was unable to move him around to score, so Man led after one, 1-0.

Man went scoreless in the top of the second. Then Madison’s Will Thompson drove in Jay Sharps with a triple to tie the score at 1-1. Left fielder Jordan Fowler then scored Thompson to make it 2-1 after two innings.

Man put two runners on in the top of the third with no outs but some timely Madison defense prevented them from scoring. In the bottom of the inning, shortstop Cooper Martin drilled a one out single. He scored Madison’s third run when on a hard double to right by centerfielder Griffin Miller, making it 3-1.

In the top of the fourth, Man tied the game as Colton Miller and Jace Adkins came in to score. Madison did not score in their half of the inning, to make it 3-3 after four.

Jacob Wells and Jeremiah Harless led off the Man fifth with singles but they were unable to cross the plate. In the bottom of the fifth, Keaton Wheatley singled to lead off for Madison. Pinch runner Andrew Britton came on to replace him. Griffin Miller followed with a double that put runners at second and third. Reece Carden then drilled a double, scoring both runs. Sharps followed that with a double, scoring Carden and it was 6-3. Keeping the string of doubles alive, Thompson then stroked one but Sharps was thrown out on a close play at the plate.

John McCoy produced a one-out single for Man but there was no further offense, giving Madison the hard-fought 6-3 decision.

Madison was managed by Josh Sharps, with Eric Dolin, Eric Fowler and J.D. Elkins providing coaching assistance.

For the tournament, Martin led Madison with 14 runs scored and 16 runs batted in. Thompson led the team with a .929 batting average, going 13-14 for the tournament. Devin Breland led the team with five pinch hits and Will Elkins provided a defensive presence behind the plate.
