AARP Driver Safety Program

An AARP Driver Safety Program will be held July 16 and 17, from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., at Madison Baptist Church. The eight-hour course will be taught by Tom Wills in the Fellowship Hall.

The program is coordinated through AARP and sponsored by Premier Bank and Madison Baptist Church. It is designed for drivers 50 years of age and older. Auto insurance discounts are given in most states to those who complete the course. Check with your insurance agent

Cost for the program is $12 for AARP members and $14 for non-members.

Deadline to sign up is July 1 and classes are limited. Pre-registration is required.

Public Service Announcement

The Food Handlers Classes will be held at the Public Health Building located near Danville, WV just off the Lick Creek Road. Dates and times are as follows:

Monday-July 8 2013—2:00p.m. & 6:00p.m.

Please note that under State Law any person(s) that is involved in the preparation or service of food for public consumption is required to attend a certified food service training course. The course will be conducted by Sandra Giles, Boone County Sanitarian.

Notice of Meeting

The Boone County Public Service District will hold its regular monthly Water and Wastewater meetings on Monday, July 8, 2013 at the Board office. If you wish to be on the agenda please call the Board office at 304-369-2622.

The Water Board meeting will open at 6:00 p.m., prevailing time, followed by the Wastewater meeting at its Board office room 101 of the Danville Community Center, Hopkins Avenue, Danville, West Virginia, for the following purposes:

Take a Kid Fishing Weekend

The John A. “Tony” Workman “Take a Kid Fishing Weekend” has been scheduled for July 6 & 7 2013. This annual event is a loose-knit endeavor to get kids out to the rivers and lakes and get them fishing!

No matter where you are, or what time you plan on doing it, take a kid fishing on July 6th or 7th 2013.

In remembrance of John A. “Tony” Workman, a Paramedic and former Coal Miner from Boone County, the “Take a Kid Fishing” weekend was developed to honor Tony’s dedication to the community and to kids everywhere. Tony’s love of the outdoors, especially fishing, was evident in his daily life. A great family man, Tony left this Earth on July 31 2012. He will be missed, but never forgotten.

Take part in this effort to show kids good sportsmanship and fishing etiquette and to teach kids how to fish and how to fish responsibly!

Health Fair

There will be a health fair and blood work at the Madison Nutrition Center at Lick Creek Road in Danville from 8 to 11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 10, 2013.

The cost is $15 for age 59 and under and free to Boone County residents 60 years of age and older. It is paid and sponsored by Boone County Community Organization. The blood work will be done by Boone Memorial Hospital.

Fasting 12 hours is required for the best results. Snacks will be provided.

Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program

The Boone County Community Organization through the Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program has received $20 vouchers for fruits and vegetables.

To be eligible to receive coupons you must be at least 60 years of age and have a photo ID and meet income guidelines.

The income guidelines are household of one, $1,772 monthly; household of two $2,392; household of three $3,011; household of four $3,631; and household of five $4,251. All before taxes.

BCCO staff will take applications beginning Monday, July 8, Monday through Friday at the Boone County office from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Coupons must be spent by Oct. 31, 2013.

Energy Express

Currently taking applications from K to 5th grade students of Madison and Brookview on June 24th to August 2nd, Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Farmers Market Vouchers

The Boone County WIC Office will once again be offering the Farmers Market Vouchers. These vouchers will be given out to those participants that are currently on WIC.

The participant must be up-to-date on their appointments and MUST bring their WIC folder with them.

Qualified WIC participants may come in to the WIC Office from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. on the following Tuesdays in July: 9th, 16th, 23rd, and 30th. August dates to be announced.

Boone County 4-H Camp

Boone County 4-H Camp will be held July 21-26 at Glenwood Park in Princeton, WV. Camp is open to all county youth ages 9 (finished 3rd grade) to 21, and no prior experience in 4-H is required before attending.

The cost for camp is $50 for full price and $20 for those who qualify for free or reduced lunch, and scholarships are available for those with financial need. Transportation to camp is also provided.

A Graley, Payne, Barker and Bush family reunion is planned for Saturday, July 20, at the Dartmont Park, beginning at noon.

Neighborhood Watch meeting at Griffiths Branch

The next meeting will be held July 16, 2013, at Griffiths Branch Church of Christ in Uneeda at 6 p.m. Monthly meetings to be held the third Tuesday of every month starting in July.

Sherman High School’s classes reunion

Sherman High School’s classes of 1950, 1951, and 1952 will hold its Class Reunion on Saturday, September 14, 2013 at the Holiday Inn & Suites (formerly Ramada Inn) in South Charleston. Once again, members of the Sherman classes of the 1940’s are invited to attend.

BCARSE meeting

The Boone County Association of Retired School Employees (BCARSE) will meet Wednesday, July 17, 2013, at Park Avenue Restaurant in Danville.

A historian from the Capitol’s Cultural Arts Center will have the program. A great celebration of West Virginia’s 150th birthday will be observed, as well as our nation’s birthday. Come prepared for a celebratory time. Delores Cook will present the devotion.

Door prizes will be won and the 50/50 will be available. Special coins will be given to those that hold the “lucky number.”

Diabetic Support Group

This group is sponsored by the Boone Co. Health Dept. and meets each month on the second Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Madison-Danville Nutrition Center at Lick Creek.

If you are a diabetic or someone you love is, joint us for informative programs, fun and fellowship. On occasion, we have “diabetic friendly” foods.

The next meeting is scheduled for Wed., July 10 at 2 p.m. at the Nutrition Center. The program will be presented by Ms. Liz Lawson, RN, from the Boone Co. Health Dept., titled “Vacation eating.” Free and helpful literature for diabetic living is available.

Veteran’s Memorial

Madison VFW Post 5578 is building a Veteran’s Memorial to honor mothers of veterans and veterans. Purchase a brick for $50.

Boone Memorial Hospital’s Annual Health Fair has been scheduled for Friday, October 4, 2013, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
