Scott High School picked up the girls championship in the Cardinal Conference Track Meet held May 2 at Poca High School. Meanwhile, the Skyhawk boys placed third overall at Poca.


It was the first Cardinal Conference championship in school history. Standout Will Shaffer ran a 4:24 mile by himself to lead the domination by the Skyhawk boys.


On the girls side, Courtney Goodwin ran a 13.45 two-mile, good enough for first place. Lauren Ball ran the two miles in 15.32 to rank fourth.


Brittany Green placed first in the one-mile at 5.56. The domination by Scott was shown here as Samantha Graffius placed second at 5.57; and Sheena Chambers was third at 5.58.


Graffius was first in the 800-meter at 2.29. Second place went to Green, at 2.29; while Goodwin was third at 2.44. Ashley Johnson placed fourth in the 400-meter at 1:05:02.


Hayley Damron took first place in the 300-meter hurdle, at 49:48. Maggie Lester placed fifth, with a time of 55:85; and sixth place went to Megan Blankenship at 56:17.


Ashley Johnson picked up third place in the 200-meter and second in the 100, with times of 28.27 and 13:28 respectively. Julie Conway was fourth in the 100-meter high hurdle, with 17:89. Fifth place went to Maggie Hager, at 18:10.


Damron wsa first in the long jump at 15-09.and Cherrikah Mayhorn placed third in the shot put at 30-06. Mayhorn was fourth in the discus at 65-00; with Carlie Ramsaver placing fifth at 61-00.


Third place in the 4x100 meter relay went to the team of Ashley Johnson, Jessy Blankenship, Julie Conway and Damon, with a time of 55.32. The team of Hager, Jessy Blankenship, Lester and Kaitlyn Buckner also placed third in the 4x200 meter, with 2:00.79.


In the 4x400 relay, Scott’s team was second at 4:41.03. Members were Graffius, Jessy Blankenship, Green and Megan Blankenship. The 4x800 relay was won by the team of Graffius, Jessy Blankenship, Sheena Chambers and Green, at 11:10.34. The Scott squad also won the 4x100 meter shuttle hurdle relay, at 1:12.10. Members were Lester, Hager, Damron and Conway.


Overall, the champion Skyhawks had 152 points. Poca was second, with 90 points; Herbert Hoover, third, with 78; Wayne, fourth; Chapmanville, fifth; Sissonville, sixth; and Mingo Central, seventh.


On the boys side, Thomas Brisky finished fifth in the 100-meter at 12.42. Nick Weeks wsa fourth in the 200-meter with a time of 24.48. Weeks also placed third in the 400-meter, with a time of 55.07. Wayne McComas finished fifth in the 400, with a time of 57.21.


Will Shaffer won the 800-meter, with a time of 2:02.88. Zack Marcum was second, at 2:15.32; and Wade McComas, fourth, at 2:21.76. Shaffer also took the one-mile, with a time of 4:24.63, setting a new school record. Jonathan Chambers was fifth, at 7:04.12.


Richard Pratt was fourth in the 110 hurdle, with a time of 17.75. Zack Marcum came in second in the 300, at 43.31.


Fifth place in shot put went to Dezmond Cordero, at 39-11. Nick Lambert was fourth in the discus, at 114-00. Fifth place went to Ryan Honeycutt, at 108-00; and sixth to Cordero, at 102-00.


Scott was sixth in the 4x100-meter relay, at 49.26. The team consisted of Brisky, Pratt, Nick Paitsel and Gillispie. The team was third in the 4x200-meter, at 1:38.43. Those on the squad were Marcum, Weeks, McComas and Gillispie.


The Skyhawks won the 4x400-meter relay, at 4:48.80. On that team were Weeks, McComas, Honeycutt and Shaffer. The 4x100 hurdle relay found third place going to Brisky, Zack Marcum, Nick Marcum and Richard Pratt. The time was 1:15.47.


Overall, Poca won the event, with 133 points. Hoover came in second, with 91; and Scott was third with 87. Chapmanville came in fourth, with 47 points; Wayne, fifth, with 43; Central, sixth, with 18; and Sissonville, seventh, with 11.
