DVD distributors took the July 4 weekend off, offering only second-rate product. If you do, however, want to rent flicks between dips in the pool, we have your back. Here are several you may have missed when they first rolled out, but are worth catching up with on this holiday weekend.

“The Loved Ones” — A teenager struggling to overcome the death of his father finds himself in real trouble, when he is kidnapped by a disturbed classmate and her psychotic father. This movie blows away the current torture/horror craze by offering up fully developed characters who are the thrust into a severe situation. The performances are quite good and the gore scenes are well rendered and build in intensity up until the righteous conclusion.

“Lockout” — Science fiction/action flicks tend to star Tom Cruise or Will Smith. They also are usually quite dull and overblown. This flick delivers the goods, though, by taking an actor who doesn’t usually get to star in big action movies (Guy Pearce) and placing him in a futuristic “Die Hard”-type scenario. Great stuff that has it all, including prison breaks, snappy dialogue and great special effects. Fun stuff, with no aftertaste.

“Alphas: Season 2” — They never should have cancelled this excellent series, so enjoy the final season that pits a secret government group of gifted mutants against a shadow group that means to control them. Fun and smart, with strong performances.

“The Fugitive” — You can get volumes of this exceptional series for under 10 bucks, and it is worth your money. David Jansen stars as Richard Kimble. The show mixes elements of crime shows and road dramas, as the character flees authorities after being wrongfully convicted in the death of his wife. Kimble knows the killer was a one-armed man, and he travels the country looking for the man while trying to elude the determined Marshall who is charged with capturing him.
