Heavily traveled W.Va. Route 10 has been closed to traffic until further notice. Construction, excavation, rains and rock slides have been happening along the road recently, with one truck crushed in the process.

This stretch of Route 10 has long been regarded as one of the most dangerous roads in the state. Closing the road will expedite the project, which will give motorists a safer commute that takes less time.

The project to build the new connector by the U.S. Department of Transportation, Federal Highway Administration, has a cost of $45,270,200.

Chris Collins, District 2 Construction Engineer says public safety is the most important reason for closing the road, “With the excavation, loose rock and rains we’ve been having, the construction workers and motorists are in danger.”

Collins went on to say if the road is left open, it could greatly extend the length of time to complete the project. He also said the contractor had submitted a request for a long-term closure of the road. When asked about a 90-day closure, Collins said that timeframe had been mentioned, but it could be longer.

In the meantime, motorists who regularly travel on Route 10 must plan to take an alternate route and allow more time for their commute.
