University of Charleston President Ed Welch and Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College First Lady/President Joanne Jaeger Tomblin today signed an articulation agreement, which allows Southern students to easily transition into select bachelor degree programs at UC after completing an associate degree. The signing took place today at the Southern campus in Mount Gay, W.Va.
“We are delighted that this partnership with the University of Charleston will provide our students another pathway to a four-year degree. We are very excited about the additional options this agreement will provide,” said Tomblin. “We will continue to strive to provide students opportunities to excel not only while they are on our campus, but also as they continue their education at four year institutions.”
The articulation agreement will enable Southern students the ability to better plan their academic careers and minimize credit loss when transferring to UC to earn their baccalaureate degrees. Transfer students will be eligible to graduate with a bachelor’s degree in just two years, and in many cases move directly into one of UC’s graduate programs, such as the Master of Business Administration and Leadership, Master of Strategic Leadership or Master of Forensic Accounting.
“The University of Charleston has a proud history of serving students in Southern West Virginia and we are pleased to provide incentives for students who earn degrees at Southern to be successful,” said Dr. Welch. “This agreement offers a clear path for these students to continue their college careers at UC and attain their personal and professional goals.”
Southern students who serve in the West Virginia National Guard and transfer to UC will be eligible for the Golden Eagle Scholarship. The scholarship will provide up to $9,000 per year in tuition assistance, while the State of West Virginia provides a $6,500 educational stipend to National Guard members. The scholarship aid from UC will mean that members of the National Guard can attend UC at a very affordable cost.
In addition to the National Guard scholarship, the University of Charleston participates in the Yellow Ribbon Program, which provides tuition benefits to veterans. UC is recognized as Military Friendly School, which recognizes the top 15 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools in the country.
