The route 10 road closure brought the question of how the students were going to make it to school if buses couldn’t travel over Kelly Mountain. The Logan County Board of Education has set new boundary lines, made plans for those attending vocational school and are working with faculty and staff to address the issue.

Logan County Schools Superintendent Phyllis Doty decided to check out the situation.

“I would not put children or employees in danger,” said Doty, “I drove both routes. I drove over Kelly Mountain and I drove to Gilbert and over Horsepen Mountain. When I got home, I thought this can’t happen and I started plannning.”

Boundaries have been changed for students who live at Man, but have been attending Logan High School. From now on, those students will attend Man High School. If the students currently attending Logan High School want to continue as a student there, they will have to provide their own transportation.

“I personally called each family affected by this, unless the phone number was wrong. I wanted them to hear it from me that the change was going to occur,” said Doty.

Doty went on to say the students at Man High School who attend the Ralph R. Willis Vocational School will be attending classes at Man High School until route 10 is reopened.

“A certified instructor who lives in the Man area will provide safety and OSHA regulation training, which is the type of training they would receive during the first 60 days anyway.”

Doty says faculty and staff may be able to negotiate a trade between schools to avoid the expense, delays and detour. She says she is trying to work with any employees who come to her with issues caused by the road closure. These changes will be on a temporary basis until the road re-opens.

“We are all going to benefit from the new road,” said Doty, “We will be so happy after it opens, we won’t remember the inconvenience.”
