Beckley — The American Red Cross received a generous donation of $1,211.50 from Emily Perkins who is nine years old and lives in Beckley, to support the Oklahoma Tornado Fund.

When Emily heard about the tornados in Oklahoma, she wanted to send toys to the children. She said, “Mommy, if everything was destroyed then the children have nothing to play with. That’s sad.” Her mother, Holly Perkins thought about sending small bears to the children but she realized that the Red Cross and the parents of those children were more likely worried about providing food, shelter and medicine than toys. So Emily went around the neighborhood and offered to do yard work for donations.

She originally made a flyer then went to BCR Office Supplies from Beckley where they made free copies for her and let her place one in their window.

The No Pants Players, a comedic improvisation troupe from St. Albans, learned about Emily’s mission and invited her to a benefit show and let her set up a table to receive donations. “Emily literally has the biggest heart of anyone I have ever known, how many nine year olds would do something like this?” says her mother, Holly. “If only we could all just step back, take a deep breath, pay attention to the world around us, and take a cue from Emily the world would be a better place.”
