PRESTONSBURG — Kentucky Power is expected today to unveil its recommendations for economic development in the Big Sandy region.

The utility will host a luncheon today at Jenny Wiley State Resort Park, during which it is expected to deliver the findings of a study of economic development opportunities in Floyd, Johnson, Knott, Lawrence, Letcher, Magoffin, Martin and Pike counties.

Kentucky Power enlisted the help of economic development consultant InSite Consulting earlier this year to aid in the study. Over the course of the study, researchers worked with the Southeast Kentucky Chamber of Commerce and business, community, civic and government leaders in the region, to work on a “blueprint” to enhance economic development.

“Economic development does not just happen on its own,” Brad Hall, external affairs manager with Kentucky Power, said in May. “It takes a concerted effort of all involved to successfully market an area to those looking to site new business and industry. An area or a region needs to be prepared when companies call with siting proposals. Economic development is a competitive business, if a region does not have a plan to facilitate economic development or prompt answers to the questions that potential enterprises seek, then those companies move on to the areas or regions that do,” Hall said, adding, “and opportunity is lost.”

The presentation will take place at the Wilkinson Stumbo Convention Center, beginning at noon.
