Prenter Community Reunion


The Prenter Community reunion will be held this year on August 10, 2013 at the Racine Volunteer Fire Department beginning at noon.


All current or former residents of Prenter are welcome as well as anyone that has connections to our town.


We are serving hot dogs and asking each family to bring drinks such as soda or water that their family may want plus a little extra.

17th Annual Brush Creek Grade School Reunion


The 17th Annual Brush Creek Grade School Reunion is planned for Saturday, August 17. The B.B. Johnston Shelter at Racine Park been reserved for the event, which begins at noon. Former students and teachers will gather for a few hours to spend time with longtime friends and former classmates. Soft drinks, plates, napkins, cups and eating utensils will be provided. Please bring a covered dish.


Band-fest in Madison


There will be a “Band-fest” at 7 p.m., Friday, Aug. 2, 2013, sponsored by REV-UP Madison. There will be cash prizes for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places.

Seeking families to make a difference


Burlington United Methodist Family Services is currently seeking foster homes in the Raleigh/Boone County area. Foster Parents will receive training and support. Please contact Steven or Lisa at 304-252-1598.


Hot dog sale


There will be a hot dog sale at the Madison/Danville Community Center at Lick Creek from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 3, 2013.


Please come out and help support the local senior center.


Appalachian Council Head Start/Pre-K


Appalachian Council Head Start is now accepting applications for the 2013-2014 school year. Children must be 3 or 4 years old by Sept. 1, 2013.


Services are available for children with disabilities or special needs. There is no fee required for entrance into Head Start.


Information needed to apply: Verification of income for a 12 month period, birth certificate from vital statistics and an immunization record.


Head Start/Pre-K locations: Brookview Elementary, Danville Head Start, Nellis Elementary, Prenter Head Start, Racine Head Start, Ramage Elementary, Wharton Elementary and Whitesville Elementary.

Library board meeting


The next meeting of the Boone-Madison Public Library Board of Trustees will be held on Aug. 15 at 5 p.m. The meeting is open to the public.

The Cabell Reunion


The Cabell Reunion will be held at the Church of Christ Activity Building on Sunday, Aug. 11, 2013, beginning at 1 p.m.


This building is located on Rt. 94, across from the turn off to Foster Hollow in Boone County.

Family reunion


The Roberts, Hager, Lovejoy family reunion will be on Sunday, Aug. 11, 2013, at the Mud River Dam at shelter No. 2. There will be singing and preaching. Bring a covered dish. Everyone is welcome to attend this reunion.


Scott High School cheerleading tryouts


Scott High School cheerleading tryouts is scheduled for Monday, Aug. 5, 2013, at the Scott High School Gym.


There will be a workshop from 9 a.m. to noon, and tryouts will begin at 2 p.m.

Orientation Dates Announced


Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College will begin a series of informative and enjoyable orientation programs beginning in August.


New Student Orientation is a great way to learn about campus resources, tour the campus and have the opportunity to meet with an advisor. A student’s academic and career journey requires preparation and Southern has created an orientation program to help our students succeed.


The one day sessions will be held as follows: August 1st at the Lincoln County site, August 5th on the Logan Campus, August 6th on the Williamson Campus, August 7th on the Boone Campus and August 8th on the Wyoming Campus.


All sessions begin at 10am and refreshments will be served.


A special Adult/Veterans Orientation will begin at 2pm on July 31st on the Logan Campus.

Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program


The Boone County Community Organization through the Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program has received $20 vouchers for fruits and vegetables.


To be eligible to receive coupons you must be at least 60 years of age and have a photo ID and meet income guidelines.


The income guidelines are household of one, $1,772 monthly; household of two $2,392; household of three $3,011; household of four $3,631; and household of five $4,251. All before taxes.


BCCO staff started taking applications beginning Monday, July 8, Monday through Friday at the Boone County office from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.


Coupons must be spent by Oct. 31, 2013.


Farmers Market Vouchers


The Boone County WIC Office will once again be offering the Farmers Market Vouchers. These vouchers will be given out to those participants that are currently on WIC.


The participant must be up-to-date on their appointments and MUST bring their WIC folder with them.


Qualified WIC participants may come in to the WIC Office from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. on the following Tuesdays in July 30th. August dates to be announced.

CASA volunteers needed


Western Regional CASA reaches Kanawha, Lincoln, Boone, Putnam, Cabell, and Wayne counties. CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) is a non-profit organization that desires for every child in abuse/neglect proceedings to receive a permanent residence.


Volunteers gather information and advocate on the behalf of the children within a case. Right now, Boone County is looking for volunteers, so come help reach that many more children in our communities.

Scott Golf Team


The 2013 Scott golf team will have their first practice on Monday, August 5th at Riverview Country Club. Practice will begin at 8:30 a.m. All players must have a physical before they can participate.

Dillon Family Reunion


The annual Dillon family reunion will be held at the Wharton/Barrett Community Center at Wharton on Saturday, Aug. 10th at 1 p.m.


Please bring a covered dish and come join us for a day of good food, fun and fellowship. Take this opportunity to see family and friends you haven’t seen for a while. Let’s keep the tradition going that was started years ago by Hi and Neva Dillon of Bob White.


Sherman High School’s classes reunion


Sherman High School’s classes of 1950, 1951, and 1952 will hold its Class Reunion on Saturday, September 14, 2013 at the Holiday Inn & Suites (formerly Ramada Inn) in South Charleston. Once again, members of the Sherman classes of the 1940’s are invited to attend.

This group is sponsored by the Boone Co. Health Dept. and meets each month on the second Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Madison-Danville Nutrition Center at Lick Creek.

Madison VFW Post 5578 is building a Veteran’s Memorial to honor mothers of veterans and veterans. Purchase a brick for $50.
