BROWNSFORK – Katherine Caudill wasn’t sure what to think this week when she learned ornaments placed on her father’s grave had been destroyed. It was something unthinkable.

Her father, Floyd Lewis, passed away in December and the family recently placed several items on or around his grave, including an angel, a plaque, and several lights. But on Thursday, she discovered the lights had all been broken and the angel had been smashed to pieces. The plaque, the base of which had been sunken into the ground for stability, was apparently pulled up and tossed into a stand of weeds a few feet away.

“I’m all to pieces,” Caudill said on Thursday, standing over the grave and looking down at the result of what she believes is vandalism. “This is devastating. Why would someone fool with my daddy’s grave?”

Both Caudill and her neighbor, Velda Lewis, said some have claimed that horses could have been responsible for the damage at the Lewis Cemetery, located on a hillside at the head of Brownsfork. While there were four horses standing next to the damaged ornaments early Thursday evening, nether Caudill or Lewis are convinced the animals would toss a plaque several feet or smash another ornament into dozens of pieces. And a headstone placed at the grave of Lewis’s late uncle, Matt Collins, had been turned sideways atop its base.

“How could a horse have picked [the plaque] up and put it here, and turned the headstone around?” Caudill asked.

Lewis noted they did call the Perry County Sheriff’s Office, and a deputy arrived on Thursday to document the scene. She said she hopes authorities will be able to determine exactly what happened to the graves.

“The owners of the horses, I think should have to pay for this stuff if [the horses] done it,” Lewis said. “We’d just like to have some justice.”

“Let the dead rest in peace,” Caudill added. “It’s what they’re supposed to do.”
