MOREHEAD — Gov. Steve Beashear has appointed Dr. Kevin W. Pugh of Pikeville to a six-year term on the Morehead State University Board of Regents.

Dr. Pugh’s term will expire on June 30, 2019.

“We are delighted with the appointment of Kevin Pugh to the MSU Board of Regents,” President Wayne D. Andrews said. “Being a graduate of MSU, we know he will be committed to the University and our mission and our goal of becoming the best public regional university in the South, all for the benefit of our students and their families.”

He succeeds Jim Booth of Inez, who had served since 2001.

Dr. Pugh earned a Bachelor of Science degree in biology from MSU in 1997 and obtained his medical degree from the University of Louisville in 2001.

Since 2007, he has been on the staff at Pikeville Medical Center.

In his application letter, Dr. Pugh stated:

“I am a lifelong resident of Eastern Kentucky, and a proud graduate of Morehead State University. MSU provided me with a quality education and enabled me to pursue my dream of becoming a physician. I am now a successful, practicing orthopaedic surgeon in Pikeville. I credit Morehead State University and its outstanding faculty for providing me the foundation to achieve my goals in life.

“Morehead State University has long been the primary provider of a college education to the residents of Eastern Kentucky through its location, outstanding faculty, extensive degree programs, and affordability. The people of this region are both blessed and proud to have this university in our area.”

Dr. Pugh and his wife, Tonya, live in Pikeville.

He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery, Kentucky Medical Association and American Medical Association.

Andrew Abbott, a Hazard senior and Student Government Association president, also will join the board as the student member.

A design and manufacturing engineering technology major, he served as the Funding and Awards Committee chair prior to being elected president. Abbott has been a part of several organizations including Delta Tau Delta fraternity, Society of Manufacturing Engineers, and Up ‘Til Dawn.

MSU’s 11-member governing board is comprised of eight citizens appointed by the governor and elected representatives of the faculty, staff and students.
