Prenter Community Reunion

The Prenter Community reunion will be held this year on August 10, 2013 at the Racine Volunteer Fire Department beginning at noon.

All current or former residents of Prenter are welcome as well as anyone that has connections to our town.

We are serving hot dogs and asking each family to bring drinks such as soda or water that their family may want plus a little extra.

17th Annual Brush Creek Grade School Reunion

The 17th Annual Brush Creek Grade School Reunion is planned for Saturday, August 17. The B.B. Johnston Shelter at Racine Park been reserved for the event, which begins at noon. Former students and teachers will gather for a few hours to spend time with longtime friends and former classmates. Soft drinks, plates, napkins, cups and eating utensils will be provided. Please bring a covered dish.

Scott High School Class 1968

The Scott High School Class of 1968 will have its 45th Reunion Celebration on Saturday, August 17, 2013 at the Riverview Country Club.

Be there by 6 p.m. for pictures and there is a cost of $30 per person.

Old Timer’s Day Reunion

The Old Timer’s Day Reunion will be held at the Morrisvale-Ryan Community Center

On Saturday, September 7, 2013, beginning at 10 a.m.

Please bring a covered dish. Drinks and tableware provided. If you have old pictures to share, please bring.

Everyone is welcome, including children. The center has space to play horseshoes, bean bag game, volleyball, etc. It’s a bring your own situation. A playground for the children is available.

Something new: The Hatfield-McCoy Trail is open on the right about one mile after getting on to Rt. 3. Bring the ATV, and “kill two birds with one stone.”

Directions for those visiting for the first time: Corridor G to the Julian Exit; cross bridge and railroad, continue on Route 3 for 3 miles; turn left on Horse Creek Road; travel 3 miles. Meadow Fork Reunion

Meadow Fork Reunion will be held on Saturday, Aug. 10, at Spencer Chapel parking lot. It will begin at 11 a.m.

There will be gospel singing by the Spencer Family, Hager Family and Michael Dent. Bring your own chair and a covered dish and join in with the fun. You do not have to live here to join in. If you ever had a connection with Meadow Fork you are welcome to attend.

BCARSE meeting

The Boone County Association of Retired School Employees (BCARSE) will meet Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2013, at 10 a.m. at Park Avenue Restaurant in Danville.

Connie Jarzinsky, I&P Chair, will present a candle-light memorial service, remembering our members who in the past year have departed from us. Mary Ann Browning will give the devotion.

Door prizes will be given out and 50/50 is offered to those who choose to participate. This fund is used for the scholarship money available.

Jenny Light, president, invites all members to attend and enjoy food, fun and fellowship.

Madison Middle Cross Country Practice

Madison Middle Cross Country Practice will begin on August 5th, at 7 p.m. at Danville Park. Any 6th, 7th or 8th grader interested in running can participate and should bring a completed physical form to practice.

Boone County Democrat Executive Committee Meeting

The Boone County Democrat Executive Committee will hold a meeting on Thursday, Aug. 8, 2013, at 5 p.m. in the Annex of the courthouse. This meeting is open to Democrats that are interested in the upcoming 2014 Primary Election. Sue Ann Zickefoose, chair, requests members attendance and the Democrat agenda will be discussed.

Seeking families to make a difference

Appalachian Council Head Start/Pre-K

Appalachian Council Head Start is now accepting applications for the 2013-2014 school year. Children must be 3 or 4 years old by Sept. 1, 2013.

Services are available for children with disabilities or special needs. There is no fee required for entrance into Head Start.

Information needed to apply: Verification of income for a 12 month period, birth certificate from vital statistics and an immunization record.

Head Start/Pre-K locations: Brookview Elementary, Danville Head Start, Nellis Elementary, Prenter Head Start, Racine Head Start, Ramage Elementary, Wharton Elementary and Whitesville Elementary.

Library board meeting

The next meeting of the Boone-Madison Public Library Board of Trustees will be held on Aug. 15 at 5 p.m. The meeting is open to the public.

Public Service Annoucement

The Food Handlers Classes will be held at the Public Health Building, located near Danville, just off Lick Creek Road, on Monday, Aug. 12 from 2 to 6 p.m.

Please note that under state law, any person or persons that is involved in the preparation or service of food for public consumption is required to attend a certified food service training course. The course will be conducted by Sandra Giles, Boone County Sanitarians.

Notice of Meeting

The Boone County Public Service District will hold its regular monthly Water and Wastewater meetings on Monday, August 12, 2013, at the Board office. If you wish to be on the agenda please call the Board office at 304-369-2622.

The Water Board meeting will open at 6 p.m., prevailing time, followed by the Wastewater meeting at its Board office in room 101 of the Danville Community Center, Hopkins Avenue, Danville, West Virginia, for the following purposes:

The Cabell Reunion

The Cabell Reunion will be held at the Church of Christ Activity Building on Sunday, Aug. 11, 2013, beginning at 1 p.m.

This building is located on Rt. 94, across from the turn off to Foster Hollow in Boone County.

Family reunion

The Roberts, Hager, Lovejoy family reunion will be on Sunday, Aug. 11, 2013, at the Mud River Dam at shelter No. 2. There will be singing and preaching. Bring a covered dish. Everyone is welcome to attend this reunion.

Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program

The Boone County Community Organization through the Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program has received $20 vouchers for fruits and vegetables.

To be eligible to receive coupons you must be at least 60 years of age and have a photo ID and meet income guidelines.

The income guidelines are household of one, $1,772 monthly; household of two $2,392; household of three $3,011; household of four $3,631; and household of five $4,251. All before taxes.

BCCO staff started taking applications beginning Monday, July 8, Monday through Friday at the Boone County office from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Coupons must be spent by Oct. 31, 2013.

Farmers Market Vouchers

The Boone County WIC Office will once again be offering the Farmers Market Vouchers. These vouchers will be given out to those participants that are currently on WIC.

The participant must be up-to-date on their appointments and MUST bring their WIC folder with them.

Qualified WIC participants may come in to the WIC Office from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. on the following Tuesdays in July 30th. August dates to be announced.

CASA volunteers needed

Western Regional CASA reaches Kanawha, Lincoln, Boone, Putnam, Cabell, and Wayne counties. CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) is a non-profit organization that desires for every child in abuse/neglect proceedings to receive a permanent residence.

Volunteers gather information and advocate on the behalf of the children within a case. Right now, Boone County is looking for volunteers, so come help reach that many more children in our communities.

Dillon Family Reunion

The annual Dillon family reunion will be held at the Wharton/Barrett Community Center at Wharton on Saturday, Aug. 10th at 1 p.m.

Sherman High School’s classes reunion

Sherman High School’s classes of 1950, 1951, and 1952 will hold its Class Reunion on Saturday, September 14, 2013 at the Holiday Inn & Suites (formerly Ramada Inn) in South Charleston. Once again, members of the Sherman classes of the 1940’s are invited to attend.

This group is sponsored by the Boone Co. Health Dept. and meets each month on the second Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Madison-Danville Nutrition Center at Lick Creek.

If you are a diabetic or someone you love is, joint us for informative programs, fun and fellowship. On occasion, we have “diabetic friendly” foods.
