Rumors about car-jacking or other criminal activity along the detour route over Kelly Mountain prompted the Logan County Sheriff Sonya Porter to issue a warning to motorists on how to handle situations if they arise.

The rumors circulating include having someone who claims to be in law enforcement officer stop cars to try and get the driver to get out so they can take the car. The other rumor is of someone bumping into the car in front of him to get the driver to get out of the car so they could take the car, belongings or possibly even harm the driver.

Sheriff Porter hadn’t had any officer reports of criminal activity, but did say she had heard one rumor of a man trying to stop people, but he didn’t have a uniform on.

“We don’t want anybody stopping on Kelly Mountain. All law enforcement that is running that area are in police cars with blue lights and in full uniform. So, if someone tries to get you to stop and get out of your car and they are not a police officer, do not stop or get out of your car. Drive until you have a signal or are able to call 911 so we can get an officer there.”

Sheriff Porter says there are law enforcement officers patrolling the area 24 hours a day, seven days a week. She also noted the progress being made at the construction site.

“If the weather will just cooperate with us. They have moved a ton of dirt. I know they’ve gotten way more done since closing the road than they did having to continually open and close a lane for traffic. Hopefully, Mother Nature will hang in there with us and in a few more weeks, they will get the road re-opened.”

If you observe or have anyone try to stop your car, call 911 as soon as you can to report the incident. Do not get out of the car—unless the person who stopped you is a law enforcement officer in proper uniform and driving a law enforcement vehicle.
