The Tony Gill Memorial Fishing Tournament held Sat., Aug. 10, has once again proven to be a big hit with local anglers. Organizers report that there were more than 230 people registered for this year’s tournament that was held along the banks of the Guyandotte River.


The tournament, held in memory of the late Tony “Bluegill” Gill, who loved to fish, offers lots of family fun, along with prizes for winners and non-winners.


Winners were:


• In the Bass category:


1st place: Stephan McCloud with a 16 inch Bass. He won a trophy and $200.


2nd place: Paul Browning with a 15.75 inch Bass. He won a trophy and $50.


• In the Catfish category:


1st place: Ryan Workman with a 26 inch Catfish. He won a trophy and $200.


2nd place: A tie between Lester Farmer and Austin Fields. Both had a 25.5 inch Catfish. They won a trophy and $50.


• In the Carp category:


1st place: Lonus Pridemore with a 31.25 inch Carp. He won a trophy and $150.


2nd place: Jody Bias with a 29.5 inch Carp. He won a trophy and $50.


• The Tony Gill Spirit Award was given to Derrick Browning. He was awarded a trophy, camping gear and $30.


In addition to the winners listed above, each child, age 15 and under, received a $5 McDonald’s Gift Card and a back pack. Over 70 additional prizes awarded for those who didn’t win or catch anything including fishing rods, tackle boxes, sleeping bags, tents, camping gear and Cabela’s Gift Cards.
