HAZARD—The arraignment for a man accused of robbing a Hazard tobacco store at knifepoint earlier this month has been rescheduled.

Michael R. Gannon, 31, of Pikeville, was arrested on Aug. 9 after allegedly walking into the Fast Lane Discount Tobacco store on Main Street and robbing the establishment of over $600 in cash. Thanks to witnesses at the scene, Gannon was found in an apartment in the Hall’s Mall apartment building across the street less than 30 minutes after the robbery occurred.

Hazard Police Officer Adam Baker wrote in the arrest citation that Gannon had removed his outer clothes he had been wearing during the robbery, which was caught on surveillance video in the store.

“The clothes that he was wearing on video was found in the back of a toilet close to him. Witnesses also stated he had come into the apartment with the money and a knife. He later produced the money, which he had put in his anus in a blue glove,” Baker wrote.

According to documents in the Perry County Circuit Clerk’s office, Gannon was set to be arraigned this week, however this was pushed back to Aug. 27 because Gannon is currently receiving a psychiatric evaluation at Hazard ARH.

Gannon is charged with first-degree robbery, a Class B felony that carries a possible 20 year sentence if convicted, and one count tampering with physical evidence. His bond has been set for $20,000 cash.

Gannon, apparently, is no stranger to armed robbery. In 2007, WYMT News in Hazard reported he was charged for allegedly robbing a Subway restaurant in Pikeville. He turned himself and the money taken into police the day after the robbery. The following year, Gannon was arrested in Detroit, Mich. for walking away from work duty while being lodged at the Pike County Detention Center.
