ASHLAND – On August 11, the Tug Valley Bass Anglers fishing club held its sixth tournament of the 2013 season on the Ohio River in Ashland. Twenty-six anglers competed in the event with veteran fisherman Kevin Runyon finishing first.
The Ohio River has been up and down for the last month, but for the tournament it was up around two feet and raising. The water was muddy with a stiff current.
Weather for the tournament was good with partly cloudy skies, light winds and an air temperature around 85 degrees.
The fishing was fair for the river. The unstable water conditions had the bass in a bad mood.
The main pattern for this tournament was to fish top water in the morning then switch to soft plastic lures and spinnerbaits on any wood cover and grass in one to six feet of water on the main river. Lures that imitated bait fish were the top producers. The total amount of fish weighed in was 31.63 pounds.
The top finishers were as follows: 1. Kevin Runyon (5 fish), 5.55 lbs.; 2. Lynn Fields (4 fish), 4.66 lbs.; 3. Joe Collins (3 fish), 3.63 lbs.; 4. Michael Salyer (4 fish), 3.58 lbs.; 5. Greg Maynard (2 fish), 2.22 lbs.; 6. MO (Name withheld) (1 fish), 2.09 lbs.; 7. Tommy Hopkins (2 fish), 1.96 lbs.; 8. Trent Ramey (1 fish), 1.69 lbs.; 9. Keith Pacific (1 fish), 1.36 lbs.; 10. Johnny Webb (1 fish), 1.35 lbs.
