PIKEVILLE – With fall just around the corner, the board of directors of the University of Pikeville Alumni Association recently held its first meeting of the new academic year to resume planning for the AlumNites tour which features events in the region and across the country, and tailgate parties at the BearGrounds before each home football game.
The board of directors is comprised of UPike alumni who are nominated to serve year-to-year terms beginning July 1. The board supports the alumni association’s vision “to preserve what we were, celebrate who we are, and plan for what we will become by serving as the gateway to a world of possibilities for students, alumni and friends of UPike.” This partnership with the University of Pikeville seeks to accomplish these goals through engaging collaborations; creating comprehensive communication strategies; establishing meaningful connections; and finding contributions of time, expertise and resources.
Kay Hammond, executive director of Pikeville’s Appalachian Pregnancy Care Center and president of the alumni association, encourages alumni to get involved in the great things happening “on the hill.” Hammond said, “As a UPike alumnus, you know the value of a good education. This coming year, you can help support the university by becoming an active member of the alumni association. Help us change lives by supporting your alma mater.”
UPike alumni and special events coordinator Jordan Gibson explained that alumni can get involved by attending or hosting AlumNite events. “The goal of the AlumNites tour is to reconnect alumni near and far to one another and back to the university,” said Gibson. Recently, alumni gathered at Jenny Wiley Theatre in Prestonsburg, and the Barter Theatre in Abingdon, Va., to enjoy the arts, tour the facilities and meet cast members.
“We are excited about the overwhelming response to the AlumNites tour and look forward to reconnecting with our alumni across the country,” said Dr. Eric Becher, vice president for advancement. A comprehensive list of the 2013-2014 AlumNites can be viewed at www.upike.edu/alumnites.
Upon commencement, all graduates of the University of Pikeville become members of the alumni association, including graduates of the College of Arts and Sciences, the Coleman College of Business and the Kentucky College of Osteopathic Medicine. Monthly board meetings are open to all alumni of the university and are generally held on the second Tuesday of each month at 6 p.m. For more information about the alumni association, meetings, the board of directors, or to host an AlumNite, please contact the Office of Alumni Relations at firstname.lastname@example.org or at (606) 218-5276.
