PRESTONSBURG - The cannons will fire and the screams of wounded men will echo through the mountains as they once did 151 years ago, as the Battle of Middle Creek rages yet again.

Floyd Davis, with the Friends of Middle Creek, says the group will be celebrating the 151st anniversary of the battle, Sept. 6, 7 and 8, at the Middle Creek National Battlefield, near Prestonsburg.

The battlefield is located down the road from Prestonsburg Elementary School at the junction of Routes 114 and 404 One of the earliest battles of the Civil War, the Battle of Middle Creek launched the political career or James Garfield, 20th president of the United States, who served as union commander, during the skirmish.
