Game week is here!

This is the weekend football fans have waited for. Most all area high schools will hit the grid iron for their first regular season games on Friday.

Then on Saturday many of your favorite college teams hit the field.

Here is a reminder to local sports fans, on Wednesday, the Williamson Daily News and our sister papers in southern W.Va. will insert our pre-season high school football edition for 2013. The preview will have stories, team pictures, rosters and schedules of Mingo Central, Tug Valley, Belfry, Sheldon Clark and Phelps as-well-as schools in Logan, Boone and Wyoming Counties of southern W.Va.

Be sure to get your copy of the paper on Wednesday.

Here is the schedule for the local teams. The three main teams the WDN covers, Mingo Central, Tug Valley and Belfry will all open up at home. Sheldon Clark and Phelps will be on the road. Phelps opened up last week at Vipperman Stadium with a tough 36-34 loss to Jenkins. Sheldon Clark will host Prestonsburg, while Phelps hosts Betsy Layne at Vipperman Stadium at Belfry Middle School

As for the colleges most area fans cheer for - WVU hosts William and Mary at 12 noon, Marshall hosts Miami (Ohio) and Kentucky hosts Western Carolina, both games starting at 7 p.m.

…. The WVU coaching staff has released its depth chart for the first game. However, they have still not decided who will start at quarterback. The chart says Paul Millard or Clint Trickett, which means redshirt freshman Ford Childers is the third signal caller. (See the depth chart listed here on the sports page.)

The feeling here is that since the Mountaineers open up with a smaller school in William and Mary, no matter who gets the start, the other QB will take plenty of snaps. If things go well, even Childers may get in for a few plays.

Whomever steps up in the first game will likely be named the starter the second week. Of course, anything can happen in football with regards to skill positions - injuries, bad performances or even personality conflicts. It will be interesting to see how it all turns out.

…. Marshall’s defensive back Monterius Lovett, offensive lineman Garrett Scott, running back Essray Taliaferro and defensive lineman Jeremiah Taylor have been named captains for the Miami (Ohio) game.

This season, captains will be chosen by the coaching staff each Monday on a week-to-week basis based on performance and leadership the previous week.

At the conclusion of the season, four “season” captains will then be chosen by the team among those student-athletes who were named captains during the season

…. Reports are that Mingo Central looked good in their scrimmage against Sheldon Clark last Friday night. Stevie Hammond and Tyler Jude both took snaps at quarterback for the Miners. Mingo Central moved the ball on the ground and in the air. Hammond, Lester, Justice and Joplin all picked up good yardage. Both Hammond and Jude completed a couple of passes; both had TD tosses to Alex Lee.

The same for Belfry playing at Hazard, I heard the Pirates also looked good in last Friday’s scrimmage and the week before that at Richlands, Va. Belfry returns most of their skill position players; however, they lost several linemen due to graduation.
